LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE, 89TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION April 14, 2025 TO: Honorable Terry M. Wilson, Chair, House Committee on Higher Education FROM: Jerry McGinty, Director, Legislative Budget Board IN RE: HB1527 by Alders (Relating to tuition and fee exemptions at public institutions of higher education for certain peace officers.), As Introduced The fiscal implications of the bill cannot be determined due to a lack of data to estimate the number of peace officers that would participate in qualified degree programs. The bill would expand the applicability of the exemption from payment of tuition and laboratory fees for certain peace officers by removing the current restriction of a course being a criminal justice or law enforcement course, removing the current restriction of a student being an undergraduate, and expanding the definition of a law enforcement-related degree program for which a student must be enrolled. While the fiscal impact cannot be determined, it would be dependent upon the number of peace officers that would participate in qualified degree programs. Local Government ImpactNo significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
