The bill would require county jails and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) to conduct periodic depression screenings of certain inmates. It is assumed that any costs associated with the bill could be absorbed using existing resources.  Local Government ImpactAccording to the Commission on Jail Standards, the bill could have a significant fiscal impact on local governments, as counties would be required to contract with a medical provider to conduct the required depression screenings, although the exact fiscal implications of the bill cannot be determined at this time.
