                    LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD     Austin, Texas       FISCAL NOTE, 89TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION             March 11, 2025       TO: Honorable Cole Hefner, Chair, House Committee on Homeland Security, Public Safety & Veterans' Affairs     FROM: Jerry McGinty, Director, Legislative Budget Board      IN RE: HB658 by Tepper (Relating to the carrying of weapons by community supervision and corrections department officers, juvenile probation officers, and certain retired law enforcement officers and to criminal liability for taking a weapon from certain of those officers.), As Introduced     No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. The bill would add community supervision and corrections department officers, juvenile probation officers, and certain retired law enforcement officers to the list of individuals to which the criminal offenses of unlawful carrying of a weapon and carrying a weapon at certain places do not apply. The bill would also expand the conduct constituting the felony offense of taking or attempting to take a weapon from certain individuals working in public safety to include taking or attempting to take a weapon from a juvenile probation officer. It is assumed that any fiscal impact and any impact on state correctional populations or on the demand for state correctional resources would not be significant.   Local Government ImpactIt is assumed that any fiscal impact to units of local government associated with enforcement, prosecution, supervision, or confinement would not be significant. The bill would add community supervision and corrections department officers, juvenile probation officers, and certain retired law enforcement officers to the list of individuals to which the criminal offenses of unlawful carrying of a weapon and carrying a weapon at certain places do not apply. The bill would also expand the conduct constituting the felony offense of taking or attempting to take a weapon from certain individuals working in public safety to include taking or attempting to take a weapon from a juvenile probation officer. It is assumed that any fiscal impact and any impact on state correctional populations or on the demand for state correctional resources would not be significant. 

 Local Government Impact

It is assumed that any fiscal impact to units of local government associated with enforcement, prosecution, supervision, or confinement would not be significant.
