No. 129 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Representatives of the Taft Housing Authority are visiting the State Capitol on February 24, 2025; and WHEREAS, Established in 1962, the Taft Housing Authority provides residents of Taft with low-rent public housing; its capital improvement projects were initially funded by the federal government, but in 2019, the authority defederalized and joined the Rental Assistance Demonstration program, which has allowed it to use tax credits to fund extensive renovations of its properties; the agency is one of just 13 housing authorities in Texas to participate in the RAD conversion process; and WHEREAS, The Taft Housing Authority partnered with Santos McBain Management and Planning to renovate its 72-unit property development; that project was completed in 2023, and the development was renamed Cottonview Terrace in recognition of the area's long history of agriculture and cotton production; the project included converting two residential units into a facility for a Head Start youth program operated by the Community Action Corporation of South Texas; and WHEREAS, Today, the Taft Housing Authority continues to benefit from the able leadership of its executive director, Donnie Riojas, who has served with the agency for more than three and a half decades; and WHEREAS, Stable housing is essential to the security and well-being of every individual, and by helping local residents attain this goal, the Taft Housing Authority is empowering families and strengthening the community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas Legislature hereby recognize February 24, 2025, as Taft Housing Authority Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting delegation; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the agency as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
