H.R. No. 479 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Nocona High School girls' basketball team reached the pinnacle of success by winning the 2025 University Interscholastic League 2A Division 1 state championship; and WHEREAS, The Lady Indians began their journey to the crown by clinching the district title; continuing to excel in the playoffs, Nocona bested Hawley, Hico, Collinsville, and Muenster High Schools to advance to the state tournament for the second consecutive year; after defeating Panhandle High School 46-41 in the semifinals, Nocona moved on to the state final; and WHEREAS, Determined to reverse the heartbreak of 2024, when their title bid fell short by just two points, the Lady Indians battled San Saba High School for the state crown on February 27 at the Alamodome in San Antonio; showcasing a stout defense and a relentless scoring attack, Nocona ended the second quarter on a 13-2 run to build a 20-11 halftime advantage; after taking a 35-24 lead into the fourth frame, the Lady Indians demonstrated their resilience, stopping their foe's comeback attempt and then dominating down the stretch; emerging triumphant by the final score of 54-37, Nocona claimed the first state title in program history and ended with an impressive 32-6 record; and WHEREAS, The Lady Indians were led by Megyn Meekins, the championship game Most Valuable Player who scored 30 points and was joined by Aubree Kleinhans on the 2A Division 1 All-Tournament Team; excelling through teamwork, Nocona also received valuable contributions throughout the year from the other members of the roster: Bayler Smith, Presley Weber, Reagan Phipps, Leah Meekins, Kasi Castro, Ayden Patton, Avery Crutsinger, Heidi Atteberry, Jolie Rose, Jasmine Olivares, Krisyah Parker, Kaygan Stone, and Paige Davis; these determined student-athletes were ably guided by head coach Kyle Spitzer and assistant coaches Clayton Brown and Emma Meekins; and WHEREAS, Winning a state championship represents the culmination of countless hours of hard work and an unwavering commitment to excellence, and the members of the Nocona Lady Indians basketball team will treasure the memory of this accomplishment for the rest of their lives; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Nocona High School girls' basketball team on winning the 2025 UIL 2A Division 1 state championship and extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
