H.R. No. 606 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The 25th anniversary of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Laredo is taking place in 2025, providing a fitting opportunity to recognize Bishop James Anthony Tamayo, who has guided the diocese since its establishment; and WHEREAS, In August 2000, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop Tamayo to oversee the newly created Diocese of Laredo and to minister the unique pastoral needs of South Texas; during his exemplary tenure, Bishop Tamayo has worked to build a strong and unified diocese that serves a diverse and growing population of parishioners; he has promoted a culture of faith that prioritizes outreach and community service, and he has guided the development of numerous initiatives that promote social justice and education in the region; and WHEREAS, Bishop Tamayo draws on many decades of experience in the clergy; a native of Brownsville, he was ordained as a priest in 1976, and he went on to serve in numerous capacities in the Diocese of Corpus Christi over the course of more than 16 years; from 1993 until his appointment as bishop, he distinguished himself in his role as auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston, and he has also served in a range of leadership roles at the national level; and WHEREAS, Bishop Tamayo's compassionate leadership has greatly benefited the Diocese of Laredo, and his efforts over the past quarter century are greatly appreciated by the residents of South Texas; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas Legislature hereby commend Bishop James Anthony Tamayo on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Diocese of Laredo and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Bishop Tamayo as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
