                    BILL ANALYSIS        Senate Research Center   S.C.R. 5     89R4573 TBO-D   By: Eckhardt; Zaffirini         Education K-16         3/10/2025         As Filed          AUTHOR'S / SPONSOR'S STATEMENT OF INTENT   Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) alumnus Robert Rives was a dedicated educator and a trailblazing figure in the state's deaf and hard of hearing community. Mr. Rives became the first TSD alumnus to attend the prestigious National College, which is today known as Gallaudet University, in Washington, D.C.; following his graduation in 1893, he embarked on a rewarding career as a teacher at TSD that spanned more than four decades; he also served as the school's first football coach from 1894 to 1898, achieving a record of 10-8-1; among his many honors, he was inducted into the Texas School for the Deaf Alumni Association Hall of Fame in the sports category in 1999. Robert Rives continues to be a source of inspiration to young athletes at the Texas School for the Deaf, and the naming of the TSD middle school gymnasium in his honor would be a fitting tribute to his legacy. RESOLVED   That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby direct TSD to name its middle school gymnasium the Robert Rives Gymnasium.   That the Secretary of State forward an official copy of this resolution to the Governing Board of TSD.

AUTHOR'S / SPONSOR'S STATEMENT OF INTENT

Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) alumnus Robert Rives was a dedicated educator and a trailblazing figure in the state's deaf and hard of hearing community.

RESOLVED
