                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 18
 In Memory
 of
 Michael Ewing
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and
meaningful accomplishments remain to comfort the family and
friends of Michael Shannon Ewing of Austin, who passed away on
January 18, 2025, at the age of 55; and
WHEREAS, The son of Frank Irwin Ewing and Colleen Shannon
Ewing, Mike Ewing was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 17,
1969, and grew up with the company of his beloved sister, Anne; he
graduated from Wesleyan University and the University of Houston
Law Center, where he was a dynamic member of the editorial board
of the Houston Journal of International Law; and
WHEREAS, After moving to Austin to work for Apple,
Mr. Ewing embarked on an exemplary career in public service; from
2004 to 2008, he was employed in the legal division of the Texas
Legislative Council, and he went on to join the government
affairs office of the Employees Retirement System of Texas; known
for his diligence, skill, and keen intellect, he took on daunting
tasks with focused energy; one memorable example occurred when
legislators requested a plan to revamp state retirement
procedures, and he produced a detailed draft over the course of a
 single weekend; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Ewing formed many lasting friendships among
his colleagues and other acquaintances; he enjoyed thoughtful
conversations, lively debates, sharing stories, and providing
always reliable recommendations on Austin's music and food
 scenes, especially up-to-the-minute intel on barbecue joints;
fascinated by the "golden age" television series of the early
2000s, he formed a TV club for fellow afficionados, and he
enjoyed his own moment in the media spotlight in 2015, when he
demonstrated his knowledge and quick wit as a contestant on
Jeopardy!; in addition, he regularly participated in trivia
gatherings with a group that included other former Jeopardy!
contestants; while loyal to his Ohio roots, he was a proud
Austinite and great fan of Austin FC soccer, The University of
Texas at Austin football team, and Formula 1 racing; above all,
he loved spending time with those he cared about, and he was
deeply devoted to his sister and her children; and
WHEREAS, While the death of Mike Ewing brings tremendous
sorrow to all those who had the good fortune to know him, they
will forever treasure their memories of his irrepressible
curiosity, his wonderfully dry sense of humor, and his
enduring warmth and kindness; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th
Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Michael Shannon
Ewing and extend sincere condolences to the members of his
family: to his sister, Anne Cole, and her husband, Chris; to his
nieces, Roxy and Meg; and to his other relatives and many
 friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
