A BILL 
To amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 to require 
the Secretary of Education to send to certain students 
who submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid 
information regarding potential eligibility for assistance 
under the supplemental nutrition assistance program 
under the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008, and for 
other purposes.

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE. 1
This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Closing the College 2
Hunger Gap Act’’. 3
SEC. 2. INFORMATION ON SNAP ELIGIBILITY. 4
(a) I
NGENERAL.—Section 483 of the Higher Edu-5
cation Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1090) is amended by add-6
ing at the end the following: 7
‘‘(e) I
NFORMATION ONSNAP ELIGIBILITY.— 8
‘‘(1) I
N GENERAL.—For each year for which a 9
student described in paragraph (2) submits a form 10
described in subsection (a), the Secretary shall send 11
to such student information regarding potential eli-12
gibility for assistance under, and application process 13
for, the supplemental nutrition assistance program 14
established under the Food and Nutrition Act of 15
2008 (7 U.S.C. 2011 et seq.) in written and elec-16
tronic form. Both the written and electronic commu-17
nication shall include contact information for the 18
State agency responsible for administering the sup-19
plemental nutrition assistance program in the State 20
in which the student resides. 21
‘‘(2) S
TUDENTS.—A student is described in this 22
paragraph if the student has a negative or zero stu-23
dent aid index for the year.’’. 24
(b) C
ONSULTATION.—The Secretary of Education 25
shall consult with the Secretary of Agriculture, and the 26

head of any other applicable Federal or State agency, in 1
designing the written and electronic communication re-2
garding potential eligibility for assistance under, and ap-3
plication process for, the supplemental nutrition assistance 4
program established under the Food and Nutrition Act of 5
2008 (7 U.S.C. 2011 et seq.) as described in section 6
483(e) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 7
1090(e)). 8
SEC. 3. EFFECTIVE DATE. 9
This Act and the amendment made by this Act shall 10
take effect 120 days after the date of enactment of this 11
Act. 12
