Whereas,shortlyafterNewHaven’sAnaïsMitchellgraduatedfromMiddleburyCollegein2004,shecompletedthe
originalminimalistversionofthefutureTonyAward-winningBroadwaymusicalHadestown,amodernrenditionofthe
GreeklegendofOrpheus’sultimatelyfutilejourneyintotheunderworldofHadestoreturnEurydice,hiswife,tothe
worldoftheliving, and
Whereas,in2006,AnaïsMitchell;Lincoln’sMichaelChorney,orchestrator;Montpelier’sBenT.Matchstick,co-
creator;andothertheatricallytalentedVermonterspremieredHadestownattheOldLaborHallinBarre,andin2013,
AnaïsMitchell,incollaborationwithBroadwaydirectorRachelChavkin,MichaelChorney,andothersbeganrevising
Hadestownforgreatertheatricalglory,andEastMontpelier’sRobinsonMorsehasbeenanon-stageperformingmusician
withtheshowsinceatleast2019, and
Whereas,onApril17,2019,thedreambecamearealitywhenHadestowndebutedtoravereviewsatBroadway’s
WalterKerrTheater,andinJuneof2019,thecreators’unusualperseverancewasrecognizedwhenHadestownreceived
eightTonyAwards(Broadway’shighestaccoladeandthemostanyshowwonthatyear),amongwhichwereBest
Musical,BestDirectionofaMusical(RachelChavkin),BestOriginalScore(AnaïsMitchell),andBestOrchestrations
(MichaelChorneyandToddSickafoose), and
Whereas,theyoungthespiansofPeoplesAcademyinMorrisvilleandthenonprofitVeryMerryTheatreinBurlington
recentlyperformedanewteenversionofthisVermont-createdandTonyAward-winningshow,and
Whereas,undertheleadershipofU-32MiddleandHighSchoolPerformingArtsDirectorErinGalliganBaldwin,and
theuniqueguidanceofAnaïsMitchellandBenT.Matchstick,anambitiousU-32-MontpelierHighSchooljoint
presentationoftheteenproductioniscurrentlybeingstagedatU-32,and
Whereas,Vermontyoungsters’presentationoftheteenversionofHadestown,withthesupportofthemusical’s
creators,isanunusualtheatricaleventworthyofcelebration,nowthereforebeit
ResolvedbytheSenateandHouseofRepresentatives:
ThattheGeneralAssemblyhonorstheVermonterswhocreatedtheTony Award-winningmusicalHadestownandthe
Vermonttheatricalyouthensemblesnowstagingexhilaratingteenperformances, andbeitfurther
Resolved:ThattheSecretaryofStatebedirectedtosendacopyofthisresolutiontoAnaïsMitchell,MichaelChorney,
BenT.Matchstick,RachelChavkin,RobinsonMorse,PeoplesAcademy,theVeryMerryTheatre,Erin GalliganBaldwin,
U-32MiddleandHighSchool,andMontpelierHighSchool.
