completedtheoriginalminimalistversionofthefutureTonyAward-winningBroadwaymusicalHadestown,a
modernrenditionoftheGreeklegendofOrpheus’sultimatelyfutilejourneyintotheunderworld, and
Whereas,in2006,AnaïsMitchell;Lincoln’sMichaelChorney,orchestrator;Montpelier’sBenT.
Matchstick,co-creator;andothertheatricallytalentedVermonterspremieredHadestownattheOldLaborHall
inBarre,andin2013,AnaïsMitchell,incollaborationwithBroadwaydirectorRachelChavkin,Michael
Chorney,andothers,beganrevisingHadestownforgreatertheatricalglory,andEastMontpelier’sRobinson
Morsehasbeenanon-stageperformingmusicianwiththeshowsinceatleast2019, and
Whereas,onApril17,2019,thedreambecamearealitywhenHadestowndebutedtoravereviewsat
Broadway’sWalterKerrTheater,andinJuneof2019,thecreators’unusualperseverancewasrecognizedwhen
HadestownreceivedeightTonyAwards(Broadway’shighestaccolade), and
Whereas,in2024–2025,youngthespiansinseveralVermontcommunitiesdelightedinpresentinganewteen
versionofHadestowntoenthusiasticaudiences, and
Whereas,oneoftheseproductionsisadualschoolprojectcombiningthestudentandfacultyresourcesof
MontpelierHighSchoolandU-32MiddleandHighSchool,whereitwasstaged,withthetalentedfaculty
leadershipteamofMontpelierHighSchoolTheaterDirectorMarenLangdonSpillaneandU-32Middleand
HighSchoolPerformingArtsDirectorErinGalligan-BaldwinandwiththespecialguidanceofAnaïsMitchell
andBenT.Matchstick, and
Whereas,theMontpelierHighSchoolstudentsandMarenLangdonSpillanewerethrilledtobeessential
partnerswithU-32MiddleandHighSchoolinthismemorabletheatricalevent,nowthereforebeit
ResolvedbytheSenateandHouseofRepresentatives:
ThattheGeneralAssemblyhonorstheVermonterswhocreatedtheTony Award-winningmusicalHadestown
andMontpelierHighSchool’sroleintheWashingtonCountyteenperformances,and be it further
Resolved:ThattheSecretaryofStatebedirectedtosendacopyofthisresolutiontoMarenLangdon
SpillaneandtoMontpelierHighSchool.
