Whereas,thestoryofKeeler’sBayVarietyStore(KBV)isintimatelyintertwinedwiththe
livesofGailandMarkHorne,who,in1974,tookaleisurelydriveacrosstheChamplainIslands
anddiscoveredasmallgrocerystoreinSouthHero,whichtheysubsequentlypurchased, and
Whereas,undertheirvisionaryleadership,KBVevolvedintoafull-servicegeneralstore,
featuringabakery,abeercavestockedwithcraftbeers,thelargest802Spiritsstoreinthe
ChamplainIslands,anin-storebutchery,andmotorvehiclegasolinesales,andthisfriendly
communityretailerearnedareputationforsuperbcustomerservice, and
Whereas,atthe2000VermontGrocers’AssociationConvention,KBVwashonoredasthe
GroceroftheYearand,separately,theLakeChamplainIslandsEconomicDevelopment
CorporationawardedKBVits2017BusinessoftheYeardesignation, and
Whereas,onSaturday,September21,2024,KBVandtheHornefamilymarkedtheirjoint
50th-anniversarymilestonewithauniqueversionofthestore’sannualCustomerAppreciation
Day,andincelebration,avarietyofcommemorativememorabiliawasofferedforsale, and
Whereas,KBVhasaproudassociationwithcommunitysupportservicegroupsand
contributestolocalnonprofitorganizations, and
Whereas,thestore,whoseownershipteamnowincludestheHorne’sdaughter,Wendy,has
earnedthemoniker,“TheHeartoftheIsland,”whichwasalsothenameofalimitededition
semicentennialalethattheKraemer&KinBrewerycreatedtocelebratethisspecialanniversary,
nowtherefore be it
ResolvedbytheSenateandHouseofRepresentatives:
ThattheGeneralAssemblycongratulatesKeeler’sBayVarietyStoreofSouthHeroonthe
50thanniversaryoftheHornefamily’sownership,and be it further
Resolved:ThattheSecretaryofStatebedirectedtosendacopyofthisresolutiontoKBV.
