Whereas,approximately28percentofVermont’spopulationis60yearsofageorolder,andaccordingtothe
VermontFoodbank,thethreatofhungerconfronts12percentofolderVermonters, and
Whereas,onMarch22,1972,PresidentRichardNixonsignedPublicLaw92-258,anamendmenttothe
OlderAmericansActof1965,thatestablishedthenationalSeniorNutritionProgramforolderAmericans, and
Whereas,theimpetusforthenationalSeniorNutritionProgramwastherecognitionthatpersonsinthisage
groupmaynoteatadequatelyduetoalackoffinances,aninabilitytopreparenourishingmeals,limited
mobility,andfeelingsofloneliness, and
Whereas,inVermont,thenationalSeniorNutritionProgramisadministeredthroughtheStateUnitonAging
attheDepartmentofDisabilities,Aging,andIndependentLivingandtheareaagenciesonaging, and
Whereas,MealsonWheelsisakeyelementofthenationalSeniorNutritionProgramthroughitsprovision
ofnutritiousmeals,safetychecks,andfriendlyvisitstothoseatriskofhungerandisolation, and
Whereas,in2024,42MealsonWheelsprovidersdelivered986,662nutritioushome-deliveredmealsto
thousandsofolderVermonters,greatlyimprovingtheirdailyphysicalandemotionallives, and
Whereas,MealsonWheelsisanimportantcomponentofAgeStrongVT,a10-yearprogramdesignedto
makeVermont“agreatplaceforallagesandstagesoflife,” and
Whereas,eachMarch,thefederalAdministrationforCommunityLivingcelebratestheestablishmentofthe
nationalSeniorNutritionProgram,andthethemefor2025is“APlaceattheTable,”“[recognizing]the
importanceoflocalnutritionprogramsandthemealsbeingservedacrossthecountry,”nowthereforebe it

Resolved:ThattheSecretaryofStatebedirectedtosendacopyofthisresolutiontotheDepartmentof

Providers.
