StateofVermont HouseofRepresentatives Montpelier,Vermont ConcurrentHouseResolution H.C.R.49 OfferedbyRepresentativeGreerofBennington HouseconcurrentresolutionrecognizingMarch21,2025asWorldDayfor GlaciersinVermont Whereas,accordingtoUnitedNationsResolution77/158,whichtheUnited NationsGeneralAssemblyadoptedonDecember14,2022,“glaciersarea criticalcomponentofthehydrologicalcycleand...thecurrentaccelerated meltingandretreatofglaciershavesevereimpactsontheclimate,the environment,themaintenanceofhumanwell-beingandhealthandsustainable development,” and Whereas,theresolutionfurtherstatedthat“inmanyhighmountainareas, glacierretreatandpermafrostthawareprojectedtofurtherdecreasethe stabilityofslopes,andthattheincidencesoffloodsowingtoglacierlake outburstorrain-on-snow,landslidesandsnowavalanchesareprojectedto increaseandoccurinnewlocationsordifferentseasons,” and Whereas,theUnitedNationsGeneralAssemblyalsoexpressed“theurgent needtoraiseawarenessofandtopromoteandfacilitateactionsandsustainable measurestowardspreservingglaciers,” and Whereas,theproponentsoftheresolutionbelievedthatthebestwayforthe internationalcommunitytofocusontheseconcernswasto“declare2025the InternationalYearofGlaciers’Preservationandtoproclaim21Marchofeach yeartheWorldDayforGlaciers,” and Whereas,thefirstWorldDayforGlacierswillbeobservedonMarch21, 2025andwillincludeofficialeventsatUnitedNationsheadquartersinNew YorkCityandatUNESCOheadquartersinParis,featuringglaciologists, policymakers,andthemedia,designedtobringpublicattentiontothisclimate situation,nowthereforebeit ResolvedbytheSenateandHouseofRepresentatives: ThattheGeneralAssemblyrecognizesMarch21,2025asWorldDayfor GlaciersinVermont,andbeitfurther Resolved:ThattheSecretaryofStatebedirectedtosendacopyofthis resolutiontotheUnitedNationsSecretary-General.
