Whereas,accordingtotheNationalInstituteofNeurologicalDisordersandStroke,progressivesupranuclear
palsy(PSP)isarareonsetprogressiveneurologicaldisorderthataffectsnumerousessentialphysicalandmental
functions, and
Whereas,anestimated20,000Americanshavebeendiagnosedwiththisdisorder,andthespecificsymptoms
areindividuallyunique, and
Whereas,PSP’ssymptomsusuallyappearat60yearsofageorolder,althoughinsomecasesearlier,and
theycanresultinanindividualbecomingdepressed,forgetful,andirritableandcauseanindividualtohave
sleepingchallenges, and
Whereas,individualswithPSPcanexperienceseverequality-of-lifeissues,andcontractingthisdisordercan
necessitatecomplexcarerequirementsthatnegativelyimpactfamilyrelationshipsandthelivesof
caregivers, and
Whereas,althoughoutwardlysimilartoParkinson’sdisease,PSPisadistinctdisorderthatispartofthe
groupofdisordersknowncollectivelyasatypicalparkinsonism, and
Whereas,atpresent,thereisneitheracurenorevenamodifyingtreatment,andalthoughsomesymptoms
maybemanagedwithmedicationandcare,thelackofunderstandingaboutthediseasehasoftenledto
misdiagnosis,andthislackofmedicalknowledgehindersbothinterventioneffortsandclinicaltrials, and
Whereas,therecognitionofMay2025asProgressiveSupranuclearPalsyAwarenessMonthwillcreate
greaterpublicandhealthcarecommunityawarenessofPSP,highlightthecontinuingefforttofindacure,and
providecomforttothefamilieswhoseliveshavebeendrasticallyaltered,nowthereforebeit
