Whereas,individualswholearndifferently—whetherduetoautism,dyslexia,attentiondeficitdisorders,
executivefunctionchallenges,orotherwise—havehistoricallyfacedmajorimpedimentstofair,accessible,and
qualityeducation, and
Whereas,untilfourdecadesago,therewerenotanyaccreditedhighereducationinstitutionsdesignedand
builtexclusivelyforindividualswholearndifferently,andinresponsetotheneedforthistypeofschool,in
1983,acommittedteamofeducators,philanthropists,andcommunityleaders,includingthenPutneySelect
BoardmemberandfutureVermontGovernorPeterShumlin,himselfdyslexicandunabletoreaduntilhewas
14yearsofage,establishedLandmarkCollegeinPutney,Vermont, and
Whereas,LandmarkCollegeaccepteditsfirststudentsinthefallof1985andquicklybecametheworld’s
firstaccreditedcollegeforindividualswithlearningdisabilitiesandlearningdifferences, and
Whereas,overits40-yearhistory,LandmarkCollegehasbroadenedthecurriculumtoincludeother
academicdegreesandcertificateprograms,academicdevelopmentandcollege-preparatoryprogramsforhigh
schoolstudents,andprofessionaldevelopmentandcertificateprogramsforeducators, and
Whereas,inadditiontotheacademiccourses,LandmarkCollegeisagloballeaderinadvancing
accessibility,inclusion,andopportunityforthosewholearndifferently, and
Whereas,nearly11,000studentsandprofessionalsfrom55countrieshavestudiedatLandmarkCollege,
openingnewdoorsofopportunityforthosewholearndifferentlyandpreparingthemforacademicandcareer
success, and
Whereas,theschoolisthelargestemployerinPutneyandoneofthelargestyear-roundemployersin
southernVermont, and
Whereas,theoutstandingachievementsofLandmarkCollegeserveasaglowingtestamenttothededication
andperseveranceofallthoseassociatedwiththisunusualandrespectedhighereducationinstitution,now
therefore be it
ResolvedbytheSenateandHouseofRepresentatives:
ThattheGeneralAssemblycelebratesthe40thanniversaryofthefirstclassatLandmarkCollegeand
extendsbestwishesforcontinuedacademicsuccess,andbeitfurther
Resolved:ThattheSecretaryofStatebedirectedtosendacopyofthisresolutiontoLandmarkCollege.
