Whereas,theBattlesofLexingtonandConcord,foughtonApril19,1775,initiatedthelongand
deadlyconflictbetweenrebelliousresidentsoftheAmericancoloniesandthegovernmentofGreat
Britain, and
Whereas,asaresultofaCommitteeofWarheldwiththeGreenMountainBoysandothersinZadock
Remington’staverninCastleton,theirlocalfieldcommander,EthanAllen,dispatchedSamuelHerrick
tolead30mentolockdownSkenesborough(nowWhitehall,NewYork)andtoseizeBritishLieutenant
PhilipSkene’sfleetofboatsinordertotransporttheGreenMountainBoysacrossLakeChamplain,and
EthanAllenalsodirectedGershomBeachtorunmorethan60milestoalertmenlivingintownsalong
OtterCreekandbeyondoftheneedtorushtoHand’sCoveinShorehamontheeastshoreofLake
Champlain,wheretheywouldmeetEthanAllenandmoreGreenMountainBoys, and
Whereas,thisplanwasfinalizedatCastletonandtheGreenMountainBoyssuccessfullyseizedthe
British-heldfortsandliberated78cannonsatTiconderogaand111cannonsatCrownPoint,andthese
eventswereseenasearlypatriottriumphsintheAmericanWarofIndependencefromGreat
Britain, and
Whereas,overthenextwinter,anoxencrewthatBostonianHenryKnoxled,moved29cannonsfrom
CrownPointand30fromTiconderogatoBoston,wheretheywereplacedonhighgroundinorderto
forcetheBritishnavytoevacuateBostonHarbor, and
Whereas,theseepicmilitaryoperationsenhancedthereputationoftheGreenMountainBoysand
contributedtothesecuringofAmericanindependencefromGreatBritainandbeganVermont’sjourney
towardsadmissionasthenation’s14thstate,nowthereforebeit
ResolvedbytheSenateandHouseofRepresentatives:
ThattheGeneralAssemblycommemoratesMay9,2025asthe250thanniversaryofEthanAllen’s
arrivalinCastletoninassociationwiththeAmericanWarofIndependence,andbeitfurther
Resolved:ThattheSecretaryofStatebedirectedtosendacopyofthisresolutiontotheCastleton
TownClerkandtheVermontStateUniversityCastletoncampus.
