Whereas,theunusualoriginoftheBrattleboroMemorialHospitalcanbetracedtothe1843 marriageofThomasThompson,awealthyBostonian,toElizabethRowel,adomesticservant; theirconsiderablefinanciallegacy;thedearthofsewingwomenin1900Brattleboroastheir primaryintendedbeneficiaries;andtheassociatedtrust’sprovisionthatsurplusfundsbe “appliedtokindredcharitablepurposesintown(Brattleboro)”thatresultedinaMassachusetts probatecourt’sholdingthat$100,000.00ofthesefundscouldbeusedfortheestablishmentofa localhospital,and Whereas,in1904,thetrusteepurchasedtheGeorgeHallestate,knownastheHemlocks,and inthatsameyear,theGeneralAssemblyadopted1904ActsandResolvesNo.277,AnActto incorporatetheHemlocksHospitalofBrattleboro,whichthenopenedintheestate’sbuildingsas theBrattleboroMemorialHospital,featuringbotha37-bedhospitalandatrainingprogramfor nurses,and Whereas,inresponsetothegrowingneedsofthecommunity,majorcampusimprovements wereamedicalofficebuilding(1970),theGannettBuildingforpatientcare(1993),theRichards Buildingforoutpatientservices(2008),andtheRonaldReadPavilionforsurgicalservices (2022),andthesecomponentsnowcompriseasuperbcommunityhealthcarefacility,licensed for61beds,employingover600staff,thattheLownInstitutehasrecognizedasthetopVermont hospitalfor“SocialResponsibility,HealthEquity,andCommunityBenefit,”and Whereas,onOctober25,2024,thefriends,staff,andleadershipofBrattleboroMemorial Hospitaljoyouslycelebratedthisspecialhealthcaremilestone,nowtherefore be it ResolvedbytheSenateandHouseofRepresentatives: ThattheGeneralAssemblycongratulatesBrattleboroMemorialHospitalonits120th anniversary,andbeitfurther Resolved:ThattheSecretaryofStatebedirectedtosendacopyofthisresolutionto BrattleboroMemorialHospital.
