Relating to: observing August 15, 2023, as India Day in Wisconsin.
Whereas, August 15, 2023, marks the 76th anniversary of the effective date of
the India Independence Act on August 15, 1947, and the resulting establishment of
India as a sovereign state independent from the United Kingdom; and
Whereas, Indian citizens, people of Indian descent, and many others worldwide
have celebrated India's Independence Day on August 15 each year since 1947; and
Whereas, the celebration of India's Independence Day provides important
opportunities to recognize and commemorate India's cultural diversity, extensive
history, and the many historical and modern contributions of Indian immigrants and
those of Indian descent to the past and present both in Wisconsin and across the
world; and
Whereas, IndiaFest Wisconsin has been held annually since 2013 and features
hundreds of volunteers, thousands of attendees, and dozens of corporate sponsors all
gathering to celebrate India's independence, culture, and heritage; and

Whereas, a variety of sponsors, including the nonprofit organization Spindle
India, Inc., have made such celebrations possible through generous donations of
time, effort, and resources that expand cultural education, bring communities
together, and promote collaboration between India and the United States; and
Whereas, the continuing efforts of IndiaFest's organizers and volunteers each
and every year represent invaluable contributions that have and will continue to
advance cultural understanding of the Indian community and promote diversity and
inclusion for years to come; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
Legislature observes August 15, 2023, as India Day in Wisconsin.
