Eligibility for Local
Wildlife Grants
Wisconsin law directs the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to provide grants to certain
communities for up to 50 percent of the cost for projects to plan wildlife abatement measures, engage in
wildlife control efforts, or both.
Under prior law, “urban communities” were eligible for such grants. DNR’s administrative rules
further defined which communities were eligible for the grants by incorporating a definition of “urban
area” that was established in a 1989 document relating to federal transportation aids.
2023 Wisconsin Act 50 instead specifies that any city, village, or town with a population density of
not less than 125 persons per square mile may apply for a wildlife control grant.
Effective date: December 8, 2023
