2023 Senate Bill 740 Senate Amendment 1
2023 SENATE BILL 740
Current law allows an immediate family member of a person who died while serving in the U.S. armed
forces or in forces incorporated as part of the U.S. armed forces to obtain a Gold Star license plate if the
immediate family member meets criteria specified under federal law for a gold star lapel button. Also
under current law, a person who wishes to personalize a registration plate must generally pay, in
addition to the regular vehicle registration fee, a fee of $15 for the issuance of the plate and $15 in each
succeeding year to maintain the plate.
2023 Senate Bill 740 exempts a person who is eligible for a Gold Star license plate from the $15 annual
fee for the personalization of a Gold Star license plate. Under the bill, this exemption first applies to
applications for registration received by the Department of Transportation on the bill’s effective date.
SENATE AMENDMENT 1
Senate Amendment 1 removes the bill’s initial applicability provision.
