14	14	8 RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF MARCH AS SKIN CANCER
15	15	9 AWARENESS MONTH.

17	17	11 WHEREAS, according to the American Academy of
18	18	12 Dermatology, 3 million American citizens are diagnosed with
19	19	13 skin cancer each year; and
20	20	14 WHEREAS, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation,
21	21	15 skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and
22	22	16 worldwide; and
23	23	17 WHEREAS, the Melanoma Research Foundation reports
24	24	18 that Melanoma diagnoses are increasing at epidemic rates and
25	25	19 predicted that in 2021 over 207,000 Americans will be
26	26	20 diagnosed with the deadliest form of skin cancer; and
27	27	21 WHEREAS, melanoma is not just a cancer of the skin,
28	28	22 but can develop anywhere on the body, and it does not
29	29	23 discriminate by age, race, or gender; and
30	30	24 WHEREAS, melanoma and other skin cancers are thought
31	31	25 to be 90 percent caused by exposure to ultraviolet light and
32	32	26 sunlight; just one blistering sunburn at a young age can
33	33	27 double the chances of developing melanoma later in life; and
34	34	Page 1 1 WHEREAS, awareness, education, early detection, and
35	35	2 prevention of skin cancer can save lives; now therefore,
36	36	3 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF
37	37	4 THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That we recognize the month of
38	38	5 March 2022 as Skin Cancer Awareness Month in the State of
39	39	6 Alabama.
