1414 8 MOURNING THE DEATH OF MRS. MARIE MCCONNELL-PERKINS.

1616 10 WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the
1717 11 death of Mrs. Marie "Ree Ree" McConnell-Perkins of Fairhope,
1818 12 Alabama; and
1919 13 WHEREAS, her passing leaves a void in the lives of
2020 14 her loving family, many friends, and the entire community,
2121 15 where she was highly regarded; and
2222 16 WHEREAS, Mrs. McConnell-Perkins was born in 1938 to
2323 17 Emmanuel Andrews and Thelma Lyons Andrews; and
2424 18 WHEREAS, a native of Mobile, Alabama, who was very
2525 19 proud of her Greek heritage, Mrs. McConnell-Perkins was known
2626 20 as the "Golden Girl of Real Estate" in the 1970s, having
2727 21 broken the "glass ceiling" for women in real estate; she was
2828 22 named Realtor of the Year in 1983 and First Lady of Mobile in
2929 23 1990, and her company was named Small Business of the Year by
3030 24 the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce in 1991; her other
3131 25 achievements throughout her life included being a past
3232 26 President of the Penelope House, serving on the Board of
3333 27 Directors for the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and as the
3434 Page 1 1 state and local President of the Women's Council of Realtors,
3535 2 being selected to represent the ERA Real Estate Franchise as
3636 3 the Ambassador to Indonesia and Singapore in 1995, and being
3737 4 involved with many civic activities; after retiring from real
3838 5 estate, she moved to Fairhope, where she worked as a volunteer
3939 6 at Thomas Hospital for 15 years, served as the President of
4040 7 the Ladies Cotillion, and was a very active member of the Nix
4141 8 Center; she was a graduate of Covenant of Mercy Catholic Girls
4242 9 School, where she impressed the Mercy Nuns, especially Sister
4343 10 Mary Terisita and Sister Mary Robert, with her goal-setting
4444 11 and work ethic; and
4545 12 WHEREAS, a devoted Christian, loving parent, great
4646 13 cook and hostess, dynamic public speaker, and treasured
4747 14 friend, Mrs. McConnell-Perkins always said that her purpose in
4848 15 life was to make other people feel good about themselves, and
4949 16 she lived her purpose; she was also passionately active in her
5050 17 church and loved spending time with her family and friends,
5151 18 decorating, and traveling; and
5252 19 WHEREAS, she was preceded in death by her daughter,
5353 20 Dana; granddaughter, Savannah; and grandson, David; and
5454 21 WHEREAS, Mrs. McConnell-Perkins is survived by her
5555 22 loving husband of almost 30 years, Captain Michael Reid
5656 23 Perkins, USCG Retired; daughters, Angie McConnell Young
5757 24 (Robby) and Robin Marie Wade (Mike); stepdaughters, Mindy
5858 25 Houston (Greg) and Melissa Peterson; granddaughters, Carly
5959 26 Marie Nelson (Kenny), Madison Houston, and Jennifer Houston;
6060 27 grandsons, Jack Andrew Phillips (Danielle) and Grant McConnell
6161 Page 2 1 Young (Courtney); and great-grandchildren, Kenly Marie Nelson,
6262 2 Marie Claire Phillips, and Mason McConnell Young; and
6363 3 WHEREAS, although her presence will be greatly
6464 4 missed, the memory of Mrs. McConnell-Perkins will be cherished
6565 5 in the hearts of all who knew and loved her; now therefore,
6666 6 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF
6767 7 THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That the death of Mrs. Marie "Ree
6868 8 Ree" McConnell-Perkins is recorded with deep sadness, and this
6969 9 resolution is offered in tribute to her life, along with
7070 10 heartfelt sympathy to her family, whose grief is shared by
7171 11 many.
