15+SYNOPSIS:
16+Under existing law, a resident veteran who are
17+the recipient of a specified military award may be
18+issued a distinctive permanent motor vehicle license
19+plate under certain conditions if the veteran presents
20+evidence of receipt of the award.
21+This bill would add the Air Medal to the list of
22+military awards eligible to be commemorated on a
23+distinctive permanent license plate.
24+This bill would make nonsubstantive, technical
25+revisions to update existing language to current style.

28+AN ACT
1729 Relating to motor vehicle registration; to amend
1830 Sections 32-6-250 and 32-6-251, Code of Alabama 1975, to add
1931 the Air Medal to the list of military awards eligible to be
2032 commemorated on a distinctive permanent license plate; and to
2133 make nonsubstantive, technical revisions to update existing
2234 language to current style.
2335 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
2436 Section 1. Sections 32-6-250 and 32-6-251, Code of
25-Alabama 1975, are amended to read as follows:
26-"§32-6-250
27-(a) A distinctive permanent license plate shall be
28-issued to any resident of the state who is a recipient of the
29-Medal of Honor or the widow of a recipient of the Medal of
30-Honor, to any resident who is a recipient of the Purple Heart
31-Medal, to any resident who is a member of the Legion of Valor
32-with positive proof of membership and the award of the Medal
33-of Honor, the Army Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy
34-Cross, or the Air Force Cross, to any resident who is a
35-recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, to any resident
36-who is a recipient of the Silver Star, to any resident who is
37-a recipient of the Bronze Star, to any resident who is a
38-recipient of the Air Medal, or to any resident who shows by
39-satisfactory proof that he or she was a duly recognized former
40-prisoner of war, for use on a private motor vehicle registered
41-in the name of the resident. There shall be no fee or tax for

68+(a) A distinctive permanent license plate shall be

7587 regular registration fee and ad valorem taxes and an annual
7688 additional fee of twenty-five dollars ($25), and no recipient
7789 shall receive a plate for more than one vehicle except as
7890 provided in subsection (c).
7991 (b) A former prisoner of war for purposes of this
8092 section is a personan individual who, as a member of the
8193 United States Armed Forces, or while serving with a formal
82-United States ally force, or as a United States civilian, was
83-held as a prisoner of war during any armed conflict by forces
84-hostile to the United States.
85-(c) A personAn individual eligible to be issued a
86-distinctive license plate under this section may be issued
87-additional distinctive license plates, under any of the above
88-license plate categories, if the personindividual otherwise
89-qualifies to receive the distinctive license plate, upon
90-payment of all license tax and registration fees, including ad
91-valorem taxes, for the vehicles and an annual additional fee
92-of twenty-five dollars ($25) for the Distinguished Flying
93-Cross, the Silver Star, and the Bronze Star , and the Air Medal
94-distinctive license plates. Annual renewal decals shall be
95-provided after payment, if required, of license fees and taxes
96-for the years during which a new tag or plate is not issued as
97-provided in Section 32-6-63."

130142 MOH, LOV, Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver Star, Bronze
131143 Star, or PHM, or AM to be of a different color scheme and
132144 design to any other vehicle plate in this state, or POW to be
133145 of the same color scheme as other distinguished military
134146 plates in this state, whichever distinctive design applies,
135147 the nature of which shall be prescribed by a committee to be
136148 appointed by the chief legislative sponsors of this division.
137149 The net proceeds of the additional revenues from the sales of
138150 the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Silver Star, and the
139-Bronze Star, and the Air Medal distinctive military plates,
140-less the administrative costs including the costs of
141-production incurred by the Department of Revenue in producing
142-the plates, shall be distributed by each judge of probate or
143-license commissioner to the state Comptroller. The state
144-Comptroller shall distribute the proceeds into the Alabama
145-Veterans' Assistance Fund in the State Treasury."
146-Section 2. This act shall become effective on January
147-1, 2024, following its passage and approval by the Governor,
148-or its otherwise becoming law.
