13+SYNOPSIS:
14+Under existing law, the Red Mountain Greenway
15+and Recreational Area Commission is responsible for
16+acquiring, establishing, operating, and maintaining the
17+land and buildings along Red Mountain in Jefferson
18+County as a greenway, recreational, and educational
19+area, alternative transport route, and historic site.
20+This bill would rename this commission the
21+Jefferson County Greenways Commission.

24+AN ACT
1525 Relating to commissions; to amend Sections 9-14C-2 and
1626 9-14C-8, Code of Alabama 1975, to provide for the Red Mountain
1727 Greenway and Recreational Area Commission to be renamed the
1828 Jefferson County Greenways Commission.
1929 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
2030 Section 1. Sections 9-14C-2 and 9-14C-8, Code of
2131 Alabama 1975, are amended to read as follows:
2232 "§9-14C-2
2333 (a) There is created the Red Mountain Greenway and
2434 Recreational Area Commission to acquire, establish, operate,
25-and maintain as a greenway, recreational and educational area,
26-alternative transportation route, and historic site the land
27-and buildings in Jefferson County along Red Mountain in
28-Birmingham. The purpose of the commission shall be to own,
29-preserve, restore, maintain, and promote as a greenway,
30-recreational area, or historic site the land and relics of the
31-property known as Red Mountain Greenway and Recreational Area,
32-and, in recognition of the important role played by the steel
33-industry in the development of this state, to exhibit this
34-property as an example of the process of mining minerals
35-necessary for the production of steel in this state's early
36-days.
37-(b) The Red Mountain Greenway and Recreational Area
38-Commission as provided for in this chapter shall officially be
39-renamed and called the Jefferson County Greenways Commission.

6979 This section shall in no manner alter the powers, duties,
7080 property, personnel, function, or liability of the commission.
7181 A reference in any provision of the law to the Red Mountain
7282 Greenway and Recreational Area Commission shall be deemed a
7383 reference to the Jefferson County Greenways Commission. "
7484 "§9-14C-8
7585 (a) Employees of the Red Mountain Greenway and
7686 Recreational Area Commission commission shall not be employees
7787 of the state, but shall be treated as state employees for the
7888 purpose of participating in any insurance or
7989 retirement/pension programs provided for state employees.
8090 (b) The Red Mountain Greenway and Recreational Area
8191 Commission commission may pay the employer’s contributions to
82-any insurance or retirement/pension programs out of any funds
83-appropriated or available to the commission for any purpose
84-whatsoever, and the commission may deduct the employee’s
85-contributions for the programs by means of payroll deductions
86-or otherwise from any salary or compensation paid employees."
87-Section 2. This act shall become effective on the first
88-day of the third month following its passage and approval by
89-the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
