1515 TO BE ENTITLED
1616 AN ACT
1717 Relating to Mobile County; to provide for the
1818 qualifications of the sheriff; and to require completion of
1919 continuing education.
2020 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
2121 Section 1. This act shall only apply in Mobile County.
2222 Section 2. On or after the effective date of this act,
2323 an individual qualifying for election to the office of sheriff
2424 in the county or any individual appointed to serve as a
2525 sheriff shall meet all of the following minimum
2626 qualifications, in addition to any other qualifications
2727 required by law:
2828 (1) Is a citizen of the United States.
2929 (2) Has been a resident of the county for at least one
3030 year immediately prior to the qualification date.
3131 (3) Has the qualifications of an elector pursuant to
3232 state and federal law and has been registered to vote in the
3333 county at least one year immediately prior to qualifying.
3434 (4) Has been awarded a high school diploma or a GED
3535 equivalent.
3636 (5) Is 25 years of age or older prior to qualifying.

6666 (6) Has three or more years of prior service as a sworn
6767 law enforcement officer having the power of arrest.
6868 (7) Has never been convicted of a felony criminal
6969 offense in this state or convicted of a criminal offense in
7070 another jurisdiction where a conviction of the offense would
7171 be considered a felony offense in this state.
7272 Section 3. Upon election or appointment, the sheriff of
7373 the county shall attend annually a minimum of 12 hours of
7474 executive level continuing education approved by the Alabama
7575 Sheriff's Association or the National Sheriff's Association,
7676 or any other recognized executive level continuing education
7777 program designed for law enforcement.
7878 Section 4. This act shall become effective immediately
7979 following its passage and approval by the Governor, or its
