1515 HJR______ MOURNING THE DEATH OF LIEUTENANT COLONEL
1616 (RETIRED) DR. RICHARD GOODWIN.
1717 WHEREAS, it is with profound sadness that we note the
1818 death on March 30, 2023, of Lieutenant Colonel(Retired) Dr.
1919 Richard "Doc" Goodwin of Huntsville, Alabama, at the age of
2020 74 years; and
2121 WHEREAS, his passing leaves a void in the lives of his
2222 loving family, many friends and the entire community where
2323 he was highly regarded; and
2424 WHEREAS, Dr. Goodwin's passion for continued
2525 education and community service never waned; he graduated
2626 from the United States Military Academy (West Point) in
2727 1971, and transferred service to the United States Air
2828 Force; later, he taught Physics at West Point and attended
2929 the prestigious Air War College in Montgomery, Alabama; he
3030 served 20 years in the United States Air Force, retired, and
3131 continued his service to his country as a government civil
3232 servant working for the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) in
3333 Huntsville, Alabama; and
3434 WHEREAS, he moved his family to Belgium to work at
3535 NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe Headquarters;
3636 after his tour ended, he returned to work for the MDA in
3737 Huntsville, Alabama; and
3838 WHEREAS, as a teenager, Dr. Goodwin achieved
3939 scouting's highest rank, Eagle Scout; and

6969 WHEREAS, Dr. Goodwin was heavily involved in his
7070 church, and was seeking a second doctorate in Theology; he
7171 also held Master's Degrees in System Management, Nuclear
7272 Engineering, and Theology; and a Doctor of Philosophy in
7373 Public Administration; and
7474 WHEREAS, survivors include his beloved wife of 50
7575 years, Linda; children, Katie (Pete) and James (Lori);
7676 grandchildren, Amelia and Ian; brother, Hugh Goodwin
7777 (Marianne); and a host of other relative and friends; and
7878 WHEREAS, although his presence will truly missed, the
7979 memory of Dr. Goodwin shall be cherished in the hearts of
8080 all who knew and loved him; now therefore,
8181 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
8282 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the death of Lieutenant
8383 Colonel (Retired) Dr. Richard Goodwin is recorded with deep
8484 sadness and this resolution is offered in tribute to his
8585 life and with heartfelt sympathy to his family, whose grief
8686 is shared by many.
