14+SYNOPSIS:
15+This bill would designate the first Friday in
16+May as Alabama Peace Officers' Memorial Day.
17+This bill would allow the Alabama State
18+Fraternal Order of Police to hold an annual Fallen
19+Officer Memorial Service.
20+This bill would allow each county and
21+municipality to elect to observe Alabama Peace
22+Officers' Memorial Day as a holiday.

1726 Relating to state holidays; to designate Alabama Peace
1827 Officers' Memorial Day.
1928 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
2029 Section 1. (a) The Legislature finds and declares the
2130 following:
2231 (1) In 1962, President John F. Kennedy declared May 15
2332 as National Peace Officers' Memorial Day, in honor of the
2433 American law enforcement officers who have been killed in the
2534 line of duty.
2635 (2) The National Fraternal Order of Police initiated an
27-annual service in 1982 to honor and remember fallen law
28-enforcement officers.
29-(3) Since 1983, the Alabama State Fraternal Order of
30-Police has annually held a Fallen Officer Memorial Service in
31-honor of Alabama officers killed in the line of duty. This
32-service is traditionally held on the south lawn of the State
33-Capitol on the first Friday in May.
34-(4) Since its inception, Alabama's Fallen Officer
35-Memorial Service has honored 598 officers, and the service has
36-provided comfort to the families who have lost loved ones in
37-the line of duty.
38-(b)(1) The first Friday in May of each year is
39-designated as Alabama Peace Officers' Memorial Day. On this
40-day, the Alabama State Fraternal Order of Police may host a
41-Fallen Officer Memorial Service on the south lawn of the State

7584 to the livelihoods of their fellow Alabamians.
76-(2) Each county and municipality may designate the
77-first Friday in May as Alabama Peace Officers' Memorial Day.
85+(2) Each county and municipality may elect to observe
86+Alabama Peace Officers' Memorial Day.
7887 Section 2. This act shall become effective on the first
7988 day of the third month following its passage and approval by
8089 the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
