17+AN ACT
1518 Relating to Hale County; to provide for additional
1619 minimum qualifications for individuals elected or appointed to
1720 the office of sheriff, that the individual is a U.S. citizen,
1821 has been a resident and registered voter of Hale County for
1922 one year prior to qualifying or being appointed, is a high
2023 school graduate or the equivalent, is the age of 25 or older,
2124 has three years or more of law enforcement service, has never
2225 been convicted of a felony; and to require completion of
2326 continuing education.
2427 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
2528 Section 1. (a) After the effective date of this act,
2629 any person qualifying for election to the office of Sheriff of
2730 Hale County, or any person appointed to serve as Sheriff of
2831 Hale County, in addition to any other qualifications required
2932 by law, shall meet all of the following qualifications:
3033 (1) The person is a citizen of the United States.
3134 (2) The person has been a resident of Hale County for
3235 at least one year before the qualification date or being
3336 appointed to the office.
3437 (3) The person is a qualified elector pursuant to law
35-and has been registered to vote in Hale County for at least
36-one year before the qualification date or being appointed to
37-the office.
38-(4) The person is 25 years of age or older upon the
39-qualification or appointment date.
40-(5) The person has been awarded a high school diploma

67+and has been registered to vote in Hale County for at least
68+one year before the qualification date or being appointed to
69+the office.
70+(4) The person is 25 years of age or older upon the
71+qualification or appointment date.
72+(5) The person has been awarded a high school diploma
7073 or GED equivalence.
7174 (6) The person has at least three years of experience
7275 as a full-time law enforcement officer as certified by the
7376 Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission.
7477 (7) The person has never been convicted of a felony.
7578 (b) Upon election or appointment, the sheriff shall
7679 annually attend a minimum of 12 hours of executive level
7780 continuing education approved by the Alabama Sheriffs
7881 Association or the National Sheriffs' Association. Proof of
7982 attendance shall be filed with the judge of probate of the
8083 county by December 31 of each year.
8184 Section 2. This act shall become effective on the first
8285 day of the third month following its passage and approval by
8386 the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
