	17	+	AN ACT
15	18		Relating to Hale County; to provide for additional
16	19		minimum qualifications for individuals elected or appointed to
17	20		the office of sheriff, that the individual is a U.S. citizen,
18	21		has been a resident and registered voter of Hale County for
19	22		one year prior to qualifying or being appointed, is a high
20	23		school graduate or the equivalent, is the age of 25 or older,
21	24		has three years or more of law enforcement service, has never
22	25		been convicted of a felony; and to require completion of
23	26		continuing education.
24	27		BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
25	28		Section 1. (a) After the effective date of this act,
26	29		any person qualifying for election to the office of Sheriff of
27	30		Hale County, or any person appointed to serve as Sheriff of
28	31		Hale County, in addition to any other qualifications required
29	32		by law, shall meet all of the following qualifications:
30	33		(1) The person is a citizen of the United States.
31	34		(2) The person has been a resident of Hale County for
32	35		at least one year before the qualification date or being
33	36		appointed to the office.
34	37		(3) The person is a qualified elector pursuant to law
35		-	and has been registered to vote in Hale County for at least
36		-	one year before the qualification date or being appointed to
37		-	the office.
38		-	(4) The person is 25 years of age or older upon the
39		-	qualification or appointment date.
40		-	(5) The person has been awarded a high school diploma

	67	+	and has been registered to vote in Hale County for at least
	68	+	one year before the qualification date or being appointed to
	69	+	the office.
	70	+	(4) The person is 25 years of age or older upon the
	71	+	qualification or appointment date.
	72	+	(5) The person has been awarded a high school diploma
70	73		or GED equivalence.
71	74		(6) The person has at least three years of experience
72	75		as a full-time law enforcement officer as certified by the
73	76		Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission.
74	77		(7) The person has never been convicted of a felony.
75	78		(b) Upon election or appointment, the sheriff shall
76	79		annually attend a minimum of 12 hours of executive level
77	80		continuing education approved by the Alabama Sheriffs
78	81		Association or the National Sheriffs' Association. Proof of
79	82		attendance shall be filed with the judge of probate of the
80	83		county by December 31 of each year.
81	84		Section 2. This act shall become effective on the first
82	85		day of the third month following its passage and approval by
83	86		the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
