	16	+	AN ACT
15	17		Relating to Coffee County; to amend Section 45-16-62,
16	18		Code of Alabama 1975, to further provide for the appointment
17	19		of a chief deputy coroner and a deputy coroner, to provide for
18	20		compensation for the chief deputy coroner and deputy coroner,
19	21		and to repeal Section 45-16-61, Code of Alabama 1975, relating
20	22		to the appointment of a deputy coroner.
21	23		BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
22	24		Section 1. Section 45-16-62, Code of Alabama 1975, is
23	25		amended to read as follows:
24	26		"§45-16-62
25	27		(a) The coroner shall be elected at the general
26	28		election and every four years thereafter, and shall serve for
27	29		a term of four years.
28	30		(b) The coroner shall appoint a chief deputy coroner
29	31		from the judicial circuit division of the county where the
30	32		elected coroner does not reside. The chief deputy coroner
31	33		shall be entitled to compensation in the amount of four
32	34		hundred dollars ($400) per month . The coroner may appoint one
33	35		deputy coroner. The deputy coroner shall be entitled to
34	36		compensation in the amount of three hundred dollars ($300) per
35		-	month. The Coffee County Commission may adjust the
36		-	compensation and any expense allowance for the chief deputy
37		-	coroner or deputy coroner by resolution of the commission. Any
38		-	compensation or expense allowance shall be paid from the
39		-	county general fund by the county commission.
40		-	(c)(1) A Coroner of Coffee County who is first elected

	66	+	month. The Coffee County Commission may adjust the
	67	+	compensation and any expense allowance for the chief deputy
	68	+	coroner or deputy coroner by resolution of the commission. Any
	69	+	compensation or expense allowance shall be paid from the
	70	+	county general fund by the county commission.
	71	+	(c)(1) A Coroner of Coffee County who is first elected
70	72		or appointed on or after September 22, 2015, shall receive an
71	73		annual base salary of twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000)
72	74		per year, which shall be paid in the same manner and at the
73	75		same time as other county employees.
74	76		(2) The annual salary provided in subdivision (1) shall
75	77		continue to be adjusted thereafter as authorized in Chapter 2A
76	78		of Title 11.
77	79		(3) If there is a break in continuous service as
78	80		coroner on or after September 22, 2015, upon reappointment or
79	81		reelection as coroner, he or she shall receive the base salary
80	82		as provided in subdivision (1), which may be adjusted as
81	83		provided in subdivision (2).
82	84		(d) The coroner may participate in the same retirement
83	85		system and the same insurance plan in the same manner and upon
84	86		the same terms and conditions as any other employee of the
85	87		county.
86	88		(e) The Coffee County Commission shall pay all expenses
87	89		incurred or required by the coroner , and chief deputy coroner ,
88	90		and deputy coroner to perform the duties of his or her office,
89	91		including travel expenses pursuant to state-approved rates for
90	92		state employees, radio and paging equipment and maintenance
91	93		costs, and association dues and continuing education expenses.
92		-	The expenses shall be paid from the county general fund by the
93		-	county commission."
94		-	Section 2. Section 45-16-61, Code of Alabama 1975,
95		-	relating to the appointment of a deputy coroner is repealed.
96		-	Section 3. This act shall become effective immediately
97		-	following its passage and approval by the Governor, or its
