16+AN ACT
1517 Relating to Coffee County; to amend Section 45-16-62,
1618 Code of Alabama 1975, to further provide for the appointment
1719 of a chief deputy coroner and a deputy coroner, to provide for
1820 compensation for the chief deputy coroner and deputy coroner,
1921 and to repeal Section 45-16-61, Code of Alabama 1975, relating
2022 to the appointment of a deputy coroner.
2123 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
2224 Section 1. Section 45-16-62, Code of Alabama 1975, is
2325 amended to read as follows:
2426 "ยง45-16-62
2527 (a) The coroner shall be elected at the general
2628 election and every four years thereafter, and shall serve for
2729 a term of four years.
2830 (b) The coroner shall appoint a chief deputy coroner
2931 from the judicial circuit division of the county where the
3032 elected coroner does not reside. The chief deputy coroner
3133 shall be entitled to compensation in the amount of four
3234 hundred dollars ($400) per month . The coroner may appoint one
3335 deputy coroner. The deputy coroner shall be entitled to
3436 compensation in the amount of three hundred dollars ($300) per
35-month. The Coffee County Commission may adjust the
36-compensation and any expense allowance for the chief deputy
37-coroner or deputy coroner by resolution of the commission. Any
38-compensation or expense allowance shall be paid from the
39-county general fund by the county commission.
40-(c)(1) A Coroner of Coffee County who is first elected

66+month. The Coffee County Commission may adjust the
67+compensation and any expense allowance for the chief deputy
68+coroner or deputy coroner by resolution of the commission. Any
69+compensation or expense allowance shall be paid from the
70+county general fund by the county commission.
71+(c)(1) A Coroner of Coffee County who is first elected
7072 or appointed on or after September 22, 2015, shall receive an
7173 annual base salary of twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000)
7274 per year, which shall be paid in the same manner and at the
7375 same time as other county employees.
7476 (2) The annual salary provided in subdivision (1) shall
7577 continue to be adjusted thereafter as authorized in Chapter 2A
7678 of Title 11.
7779 (3) If there is a break in continuous service as
7880 coroner on or after September 22, 2015, upon reappointment or
7981 reelection as coroner, he or she shall receive the base salary
8082 as provided in subdivision (1), which may be adjusted as
8183 provided in subdivision (2).
8284 (d) The coroner may participate in the same retirement
8385 system and the same insurance plan in the same manner and upon
8486 the same terms and conditions as any other employee of the
8587 county.
8688 (e) The Coffee County Commission shall pay all expenses
8789 incurred or required by the coroner , and chief deputy coroner ,
8890 and deputy coroner to perform the duties of his or her office,
8991 including travel expenses pursuant to state-approved rates for
9092 state employees, radio and paging equipment and maintenance
9193 costs, and association dues and continuing education expenses.
92-The expenses shall be paid from the county general fund by the
93-county commission."
94-Section 2. Section 45-16-61, Code of Alabama 1975,
95-relating to the appointment of a deputy coroner is repealed.
96-Section 3. This act shall become effective immediately
97-following its passage and approval by the Governor, or its
