26 | 25 | | death on April 6, 2023, of beloved mental health advocate, |

27 | 26 | | Mrs. Betty Bailey Shirley, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, at the |

29 | 28 | | WHEREAS, her passing leaves a void in the lives of |

30 | 29 | | her loving family, many friends, and the entire community, |
---|
31 | 30 | | where she was highly regarded; and |

32 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Shirley was born on November 7, 1927, |
---|
33 | 32 | | in Montgomery, Alabama, to Evelyn Parker Bailey and George |
---|
34 | 33 | | Forrest Bailey, Sr.; and |
---|
35 | 34 | | WHEREAS, upon graduating from The University of |
---|
36 | 35 | | Alabama, where she was a devoted member of Kappa Delta |
---|
37 | 36 | | Sorority, Mrs. Shirley dedicated her life to service and |
---|
38 | 37 | | addressing mental health at the community level; she found a |
---|
39 | 38 | | heart for service because of her late grandson, Walt Gary, |
---|
40 | 39 | | who inspired her to advocate for children with disabilities, |
---|
41 | 40 | | especially through the RISE Center and The University of |

42 | 41 | | Alabama CrossingPoints Program; and |

43 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Shirley helped move RISE from an older |

80 | 79 | | their communities through volunteer work; in 2002, as a |

81 | 80 | | result of Mrs. Shirley's impactful work, the psychiatry |

82 | 81 | | clinic at The University of Alabama's Capstone Medical |

83 | 82 | | Center was named the Betty Shirley Clinic for Psychiatry and |

84 | 83 | | Behavioral Medicine; and |

85 | 84 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Shirley spent her early life as an |

86 | 85 | | active member of the United Methodist Church and later |
---|
87 | 86 | | joined her family at Christ Episcopal Church; and |

88 | 87 | | WHEREAS, she was preceded in death by her husband, |

89 | 88 | | George Sidney Shirley; grandson; parents; and siblings, |
