2626 2022 NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AWARD PROGRAM
2727 WINNER.
2828 WHEREAS, the United States beef industry is dedicated
2929 to sustainable beef production; as a result of scientific
3030 advancements in beef cattle genetics, nutrition, production
3131 practices, and biotechnologies, the United States is a
3232 global leader in beef production efficiency, reducing carbon
3333 emissions per pound of beef produced by more than 40 percent
3434 since 1961, while producing 18 percent of the world's beef
3535 with only six percent of the world's cattle; and
3636 WHEREAS, in its 31st year, the National Cattlemen's
3737 Beef Association Environmental Stewardship Award Program has
3838 annually recognized the outstanding stewardship practices
3939 and conservation achievements of United States cattle
4040 producers from across the nation; and
4141 WHEREAS, the State of Alabama's $2.5 billion beef
4242 cattle industry shares the same commitment to sound land
4343 management, animal husbandry, and the implementation of
4444 sustainable farming practices with the goal of passing along
4545 these resources to the next generation; and
4646 WHEREAS, sustainability began as a lifestyle seven
4747 generations ago when Carter Cattle Company in Pintlala,
4848 Alabama, was established; Dr. Will Carter and Dr. Monnie

7878 Carol Carter make management decisions with the future in
7979 mind, utilizing rotational grazing for their forage-based
8080 feeding program, an implementation that has been vital to
8181 improving the overall health of the farm ecosystem, soil
8282 health, forage base, watershed, livestock, and wildlife; and
8383 WHEREAS, through conservation incentives offered under
8484 the Watershed Project and Environmental Quality Incentives
8585 Program, the Carters installed 2,000 feet of water lines to
8686 two new water troughs, protected 1,250 square feet of heavy
8787 use areas, and built 1,300 feet of fence to exclude cattle
8888 from Pintlala Creek; these efforts help the Carters utilize
8989 the land in the most effective way for their cattle herd
9090 while protecting natural resources; and
9191 WHEREAS, in 2022, Carter Cattle Company was nominated
9292 by the Alabama Cattlemen's Association and partner
9393 organizations to represent the State of Alabama in the
9494 National Cattlemen's Beef Association Environmental
9595 Stewardship Award Program; and
9696 WHEREAS, in February 2023, Carter Cattle Company was
9797 named the Southeast Regional Winner, representing the states
9898 of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina,
9999 Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana in the
100100 nationwide contest; and
101101 WHEREAS, on April 25, 2023, Carter Cattle Company was
102102 named the 2022 National Environmental Stewardship Award
103103 Program winner during the National Cattlemen's Beef
104104 Association Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.; now
