48	45		WHEREAS, it is with deep sadness that we note the
49	46		passing of John Michael "Mike" Kolen of Birmingham, Alabama,
50	47		on April 3, 2024, at the age of 76; and
51	48		WHEREAS, his passing leaves a void in the lives of
52	49		his loving family, many friends, and the Auburn, Birmingham,
53	50		Miami, and Montgomery communities he called home, where he
54	51		was highly regarded; and
55	52		WHEREAS, Mike Kolen was born on January 31, 1948; he
56	53		attended W.A. Berry High School in Hoover, Alabama, where he
57	54		was a star on the football team; he matriculated to Auburn
58	55		University and played Linebacker position under Coaches Shug
59	56		Jordan and Paul Davis; he remained a loyal and dedicated
60	57		alumnus to his alma mater and returned every A-Day to
61	58		present the Mike Kolen Award to the leading tackler from the
62	59		previous season; and
63	60		WHEREAS, during his tenure with the Auburn Tigers,
64	61		Mr. Kolen led in tackles in 16 of the 25 games he started
65	62		from 1967 to 1969, earning All-SEC honors as a junior and
66	63		senior and was named Second-team All-American in 1969; he
67	64		was nicknamed "Captain Crunch" for his hard-hitting style,
68	65		but he was also a man of deep faith and was the first
69	66		recipient of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes College

100	97		Athlete of the Year Award in 1970; and
101	98		WHEREAS, Mike Kolen was drafted to the Miami Dolphins
102	99		in 1970, Round 12, pick 289; he played eight seasons with
103	100		the Dolphins under Coach Don Shula and was part of the
104	101		"Perfect" 1972 unbeaten Super Bowl Champion team, the only
105	102		undefeated Super Bowl champion team in NFL history; he
106	103		played in three consecutive Super Bowls with the Dolphins in
107	104		1972, 1973, and 1974, and won both the 1972 and 1973 Super
108	105		Bowls; and
109	106		WHEREAS, after retiring from the NFL, Mike Kolen
110	107		became a successful businessman; he enjoyed success in real
111	108		estate, as the owner and operator of the Montgomery Athletic
112	109		Club, and as the founder of Kolen Finacial Team; he authored
113	110		The Greatest Team: A Playbook for Champions ; and he was
114	111		inducted into Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1985; and
115	112		WHEREAS, Mike Kolen had a fierce love for his family;
116	113		he was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Nancy Kolen; he
117	114		is survived by his two children, Kelly and John, and his
118	115		five grandchildren, whom he treasured wholeheartedly;
119	116		although his presence will be greatly missed, the memory of
120	117		Mike Kolen will be cherished in the hearts of all who knew
121	118		and loved him; now therefore,
122	119		BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
123	120		HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the death of John Michael
124	121		"Mike" Kolen is recorded with deep sadness, and this
125	122		resolution is offered in tribute to his life and with
126	123		heartfelt sympathy to his family, whose grief is shared by
127	124		many.
