1515 HR____ CELEBRATING THE 100TH BIRTHDAY OF MONSIGNOR THEODORE
1616 H. HAY.
1717 WHEREAS, with special pleasure, we offer joyful
1818 felicitations to Monsignor Theodore H. Hay, who is
1919 celebrating his milestone 100th birthday; and
2020 WHEREAS, Monsignor Hay was born March 12, 1924, in
2121 Miami, Florida; after graduating from Gesu High School, a
2222 Catholic school run by Jesuits, he felt the call to be a
2323 priest; his journey to priesthood began by attending St.
2424 Charles College in Grand Coteau, Lousiana, followed by
2525 Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama; subsequently, he was
2626 accepted into seminary at St. Mary's University in
2727 Baltimore, Maryland; and
2828 WHEREAS, Monsignor Theodore H. Hay was ordained a
2929 Catholic Priest in 1955 by the late Archbishop Thomas J.
3030 Toolen in Mobile, Alabama; and
3131 WHEREAS, Monsignor Hay has given not only of his time
3232 and energies, but also of his compassion, intelligence, and
3333 leadership to the people under his care throughout his life;
3434 consequently, he should be recognized for his lifetime of
3535 service; and
3636 WHEREAS, throughout his 69 years as a Priest and a
3737 Teacher in the Archdiocese of Mobile, he has fulfilled a
3838 number of assignments and location changes; he was first

6969 assigned to St. Paul's Church in Birmingham as Assistant
7070 Pastor, then he became the Assistant Pastor at St.
7171 Margaret's Church in Bayou la Batre, where he also assumed
7272 the responsibilities of teaching religion, history, and
7373 algebra in St. Margaret's High School; and
7474 WHEREAS, following his time at St. Margaret's Church,
7575 Monsignor Hay was appointed as Chaplain for the Catholic
7676 patients of Searcy Hospital, a state psychiatric facility;
7777 shortly thereafter, he was appointed by Federal Judge Thomas
7878 as a Member of the Human Rights Committee where he served
7979 until the Committee's dissolution; he attained his
8080 certification as a Mental Health Chaplain while serving at
8181 Searcy Hospital by completing an internship at St.
8282 Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C.; and
8383 WHEREAS, Monsignor Hays became certified by the
8484 United States Catholic Conference's Board of Chaplains which
8585 oversees all priests serving as chaplains in the VA and the
8686 military; after three years, he was named Chief of Chaplains
8787 and served for seven years with dignity and good grace in
8888 that capacity; and
8989 WHEREAS, the Mobile Archdiocese moved for Monsignor
9090 Hays to return to Alabama to fulfill the position of Mental
9191 Health Catholic Chaplain at Searcy Psychiatric Hospital;
9292 upon his return, he resumed his position as Pastor of St.
9393 Cecilia Church where he served until his retirement in 1992,
9494 when he was named Pastor Emeritus; and
9595 WHEREAS, although retired from parish life, Monsignor
9696 Hay retained the position of Catholic Chaplain at Searcy

126126 Hay retained the position of Catholic Chaplain at Searcy
127127 Hospital at the Poundstone Admissions Unit in Daphne; in
128128 October 2002, though still in retirement status, he was
129129 appointed Administrator of St. Margaret of Scotland Parish
130130 in Foley, and he remained in that capacity until November
131131 2003; and
132132 WHEREAS, rare indeed is the impressive dedication
133133 shown by an individual for the benefit of others which
134134 Monsignor Theodore H. Hay has displayed throughout his life;
135135 he should be celebrated and recognized on the occasion of
136136 his centennial birthday;
137137 WHEREAS, a 100th birthday is a significant milestone
138138 that represents a century worth of wisdom earned and
139139 memories gained and is a cause of great rejoicing; now
140140 therefore,
141141 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
142142 LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That Monsignor Theodore H. Hay is
143143 highly honored and celebrated for reaching his milestone
144144 100th birthday and we are pleased to offer him this
145145 resolution as evidence of our high regard for his many good
146146 works and with sincere wishes for many more happy and
147147 healthy birthdays to come.
