1515 HR___ CELEBRATING ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY DAY AT THE
1616 CAPITOL ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2024.
1717 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is
1818 the first intercollegiate historically African American
1919 sorority; it was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard
2020 University in Washington D.C., by a group of 16 students led
2121 by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle; the sorority was incorporated on
2222 January 29, 1913; and
2323 WHEREAS, the sorority is one of the nation's largest
2424 Greek Letter Organizations, having more than 350,000 members
2525 in 1,024 chapters in the United States of America and
2626 several other countries; the members share the bonds of
2727 sisterhood and are committed to servant-leadership; and
2828 WHEREAS, Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
2929 Sorority, Incorporated, received its charter on October 24,
3030 1924, in Birmingham, Alabama, becoming the 15th chapter of
3131 the sorority and the first graduate chapter to be chartered
3232 in the Southeastern Region; the eight charter members, Hilda
3333 Evans, Vivan F. Bell, Jessie Coleman, Wilma Davis, Mabel
3434 Harris, Eunice Hudson, Thelma Kingsley, and Veronica Pierce,
3535 became the first African American members of a sorority in
3636 the State of Alabama; and
3737 WHEREAS, the chapter's membership has included
3838 thousands of professional women who are dedicated public

6868 thousands of professional women who are dedicated public
6969 servants and graduates from universities throughout the
7070 United States; today, chapter membership stands at 385, the
7171 largest in the chapter's history; and
7272 WHEREAS, in the early 1950s, under the leadership of
7373 A. Lucile Brewer, Omicron Omega Chapter experienced another
7474 milestone by becoming the first Black Greek Letter
7575 Organization to purchase a chapter house in the State of
7676 Alabama; additionally, in this same timeframe, they were
7777 instrumental in establishing the Birmingham Chapter of the
7878 Panhellenic Council; and
7979 WHEREAS, over the course of the last century, Omicron
8080 Omega Chapter has had a profound philanthropic impact on the
8181 greater Birmingham community, having donated over $1.5
8282 million in charitable contributions to organizations such as
8383 the United Negro College Fund, National Association for the
8484 Advancement of Colored People, Miles College, The Sickle
8585 Cell Foundation of Central Alabama, March of Dimes, Dance
8686 Across Birmingham, and the American Heart Association; and
8787 WHEREAS, additionally, Omicron Omega Chapter has
8888 invested time and financial support to Birmingham children
8989 and their education; the members have spent thousands of
9090 hours volunteering in local schools, and the Chapter has
9191 distributed over $500,000 in college scholarships to
9292 Birmingham-area students; and
9393 Whereas, Omicron Omega Chapter has overseen the
9494 establishment of five undergraduate chapters on college
9595 campuses in the greater Birmingham area: Gamma Pi at Miles
9696 College in 1970; Iota Phi at The University of Alabama at

127127 Birmingham in 1975; Mu Mu at the University of Montevallo in
128128 1978; Nu Delta at Birmingham-Southern College in 1979; and
129129 Omicron Mu at Samford University in 1988; and
130130 WHEREAS, in 2001, Omicron Omega Chapter established
131131 its philanthropic arm, the Cultural and Educational
132132 Advancement Foundation, to further its philanthropic impact
133133 on the Birmingham community; in 2022, CEAF opened The Pearl
134134 Center, a $1.6 million facility in the Bush Hills
135135 neighborhood designed as a space to facilitate charitable
136136 endeavors for the larger Birmingham community; now
137137 therefore,
138138 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
139139 LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That on Tuesday, February 27, 2024,
140140 we celebrate Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Day at the Capitol,
141141 and we express sincere appreciation to the Omicron Omega
142142 Chapter for their continuing dedication to service to the
143143 community and to the great State of Alabama; we wish Alpha
144144 Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, continued success in all
145145 future endeavors.
