15	15	HR____ COMMENDING DR. TOMMIE L. LEWIS ON THE OCCASION OF HIS
16	16	RETIREMENT AS SENIOR PASTOR OF BETHEL MISSIONARY BAPTIST
17	17	CHURCH, PRATT CITY, BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
18	18	WHEREAS, with great pride and special pleasure,
19	19	highest commendations are conveyed to Dr. Tommie L. Lewis on
20	20	the joyous occasion of his retirement as Senior Pastor of
21	21	Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Pratt City, Birmingham,
22	22	Alabama; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Dr. Lewis, called to the ministry and
24	24	dedicated to be worthy of his calling, pursued his
25	25	ecclesiastical education and earned his Bachelor of Arts,
26	26	Bachelor of Theology, and Master of Divinity degrees from
27	27	the Birmingham Easonian Baptist Bible College and the
28	28	Universal Bible Institute in Brunswick, Georgia; Honorary
29	29	Doctorate degrees were conferred on him from the Universal
30	30	Bible Institute and the Easonian Baptist Bible College; and
31	31	WHEREAS, a native son of Alabama, Dr. Lewis began his
32	32	service 52 years ago with his first pastoral assignment at
33	33	the First Baptist Church, Carver, Bessemer, Alabama; he was
34	34	called a few years later to shepherd the devoted
35	35	congregation at Antioch Baptist Church in Gadsden, Alabama;
36	36	he heeded the instruction to "go therefore and make
37	37	disciples of all the nations" and the Holy Spirit guided him
38	38	throughout the United States and across oceans to Europe,

68	68	throughout the United States and across oceans to Europe,
69	69	Africa, and Asia; and
70	70	WHEREAS, in 1982, Dr. Lewis journeyed to Birmingham,
71	71	Alabama, to lead the devoted apostles of Bethel Missionary
72	72	Baptist Church; during his tenure, Bethel experienced
73	73	phenomenal growth; he organized, established, and maintained
74	74	numerous ministries with an emphasis on building up the Body
75	75	of Christ by evangelizing, equipping, empowering, and
76	76	encouraging his flock to Exalt the Savior, Equip the Saints,
77	77	and Evangelize the Sinner; under his tutelage, 53 sons and
78	78	daughters have heeded the call go into the world and preach
79	79	the gospel; and
80	80	WHEREAS, Dr. Lewis worked tirelessly and diligently
81	81	in running the business of the church and retired the
82	82	mortgage on the first sanctuary; only one and a half years
83	83	later, the building was destroyed by a tornado; Dr. Lewis
84	84	called out to the community and Bethel Emergency Management
85	85	Agency led the way to community restoration and
86	86	revitalization; the new sanctuary was dedicated and
87	87	consecrated on August 24, 2014; and
88	88	WHEREAS, Dr. Lewis is affiliated with numerous
89	89	religious and civic organizations and has been bestowed many
90	90	awards and accolades, including, serving as Moderator of the
91	91	Peace Baptist District Association, Chairman of the
92	92	Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority, Board
93	93	Chairman of the Jefferson County Committee for Economic
94	94	Opportunity, and the founding administrator of the Pratt
95	95	City Disaster Relief Center at the George Scott Elementary
96	96	School; Pastor Lewis was Alabama's first faith-based

126	126	School; Pastor Lewis was Alabama's first faith-based
127	127	recipient of the No Child Left Behind grant for a community
128	128	learning center; he currently serves as the Superintendent
129	129	of Missions of the Alabama State Missionary Baptist
130	130	Convention and is a contributing member of the Northwest
131	131	District Baptist Convention and the National Baptist
132	132	Convention, USA; and
133	133	WHEREAS, Dr. Lewis has been the congregation's
134	134	guiding light, preaching the Word of God with passion,
135	135	power, and persuasion; his farewell worship service will be
136	136	held Sunday, April 14, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.; now therefore,
137	137	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
138	138	LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That it is an honor to commend and
139	139	congratulate Senior Pastor, Dr. T.L. Lewis, on the joyous
140	140	occasion of his retirement for his 42 years of dedicated
141	141	ecclesiastical service to the congregation of Bethel
142	142	Missionary Baptist Church, Pratt City, Birmingham, and this
143	143	resolution is offered to him as evidence of our high regard
144	144	and with best wishes for continued blessings, good health,
145	145	and prosperity in his well-earned retirement.
