Senate Bill 106as introduced would change how salaries for the Secretary and Deputy
Secretaries for the Department of Commerce are set by removing the maximum compensation
limits currently based upon the highest authorized salary for a merit system employee of the
Department to allow: (1) the Governor, with recommendations from the State Personnel Board
to set the Secretary’s salary; and (2) the Secretary, subject to approval by the Governor, to set
the salaries for deputy secretaries.
This change could increase or decrease the obligations of the Department of Commerce by an
undetermined amount dependent upon the difference in the salary amounts authorized under
existing law and the new salary amounts established pursuant to the provisions of this bill.
