16	18		Relating to Mobile County; to provide for the salary
17	19		and expense allowance of the sheriff; and to repeal Section
18	20		45-49-230, Code of Alabama 1975.
19	21		BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
20	22		Section 1. This act shall apply only in Mobile County.
21	23		Section 2. (a) The Sheriff of Mobile County shall
22	24		continue to receive the annual salary the sheriff is receiving
23	25		on the effective date of this act for the remainder of the
24	26		current term of office which commenced in January 2023.
25	27		(b) In addition to the salary provided in subsection
26	28		(a), the sheriff shall be entitled to an additional expense
27	29		allowance of thirty-nine thousand dollars ($39,000) per year,
28	30		payable in equal monthly installments from the general fund of
29	31		the county. This expense allowance shall be in addition to all
30	32		other compensation or benefits provided to the sheriff and
31	33		shall be treated the same as salary for retirement purposes.
32	34		(c) Effective at the end of the term of office of the
33	35		sheriff commencing in January 2023, the expense allowance
34	36		provided in subsection (b) shall be repealed, and the annual
35	37		salary of the sheriff shall be increased by thirty-nine
36		-	thousand dollars ($39,000) per year effective beginning the
37		-	next term of office of the sheriff commencing in January 2027.
38		-	(d) In addition to any other compensation provided to
39		-	the sheriff, the sheriff shall be entitled to cost-of-living
40		-	increases or other uniform increases in compensation in the
41		-	same manner and amount provided to county employees. The

	67	+	salary of the sheriff shall be increased by thirty-nine
	68	+	thousand dollars ($39,000) per year effective beginning the
	69	+	next term of office of the sheriff commencing in January 2027.
	70	+	(d) In addition to any other compensation provided to
	71	+	the sheriff, the sheriff shall be entitled to cost-of-living
	72	+	increases or other uniform increases in compensation in the
71	73		same manner and amount provided to county employees. The
72	74		amount of any cost-of-living increase or other uniform
73	75		increase shall be based on the total compensation of the
74	76		sheriff, including any salary and expense allowances provided
75	77		to the sheriff. During any term of office of the sheriff, any
76	78		cost-of-living increase or other uniform increase shall be
77	79		paid as an expense allowance to the sheriff, and effective
78	80		beginning the next term of office of the sheriff, any
79	81		cumulative uniform increases during a term shall be converted
80	82		to salary. Any expense allowance provided to the sheriff shall
81	83		be treated the same as salary for retirement purposes.
82	84		Section 3. Section 45-49-230 of the Code of Alabama
83	85		1975, is repealed.
84	86		Section 4. This act shall become effective on the first
85	87		day of the first month following its passage and approval by
86	88		the Governor, or its otherwise becoming law.
