	15	+	SYNOPSIS:
	16	+	This bill would designate Little Bluestem as the
	17	+	official State Native Grass of Alabama.
	18	+	A BILL
	19	+	TO BE ENTITLED
	20	+	AN ACT
16	21		Relating to state symbols; to designate Little Bluestem
17	22		as the official state native grass.
18	23		BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
19	24		Section 1. (a) The Legislature hereby finds and
20	25		declares all of the following:
21	26		(1) Schizachyrium scoparium, commonly known as Little
22	27		Bluestem, is a warm-season grass native to lower Canada and
23	28		all of the United States except Nevada and Washington.
24	29		(2) Little Bluestem fosters healthier Alabama
25	30		ecosystems by maintaining ecological balance and creating and
26	31		enhancing habitats that support environmental heterogeneity.
27	32		(3) Little Bluestem is vital to the overall resilience
28	33		of Alabama ecosystems by combating Alabama's challenges
29	34		regarding drought conditions and soil erosion.
30	35		(4) Little Bluestem contributes to the overall richness
31	36		of Alabama's wildlife. In addition to the structure of Little
32		-	Bluestem offering cover and nesting sites for birds, insects,
33		-	and small mammals, the seeds of Little Bluestem serve as a
34		-	food source for various organisms.
35		-	(5) Little Bluestem's distinctive blue-green foliage
36		-	and reddish-brown seed heads offer unique aesthetic benefits
37		-	for the residents and visitors of Alabama by adding to the
38		-	inherent beauty of Alabama's landscapes and natural areas.
39		-	(6) The planting of Little Bluestem aligns with
40		-	existing conservation and ecological restoration initiatives

75	80		(b) Little Bluestem, Schizachyrium scoparium, is hereby
76	81		declared to be the official State Native Grass of Alabama.
77	82		Section 2. This act shall become effective on October
78	83		1, 2024.
