15+SYNOPSIS:
16+This bill would designate Little Bluestem as the
17+official State Native Grass of Alabama.

19+TO BE ENTITLED
20+AN ACT
1621 Relating to state symbols; to designate Little Bluestem
1722 as the official state native grass.
1823 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
1924 Section 1. (a) The Legislature hereby finds and
2025 declares all of the following:
2126 (1) Schizachyrium scoparium, commonly known as Little
2227 Bluestem, is a warm-season grass native to lower Canada and
2328 all of the United States except Nevada and Washington.
2429 (2) Little Bluestem fosters healthier Alabama
2530 ecosystems by maintaining ecological balance and creating and
2631 enhancing habitats that support environmental heterogeneity.
2732 (3) Little Bluestem is vital to the overall resilience
2833 of Alabama ecosystems by combating Alabama's challenges
2934 regarding drought conditions and soil erosion.
3035 (4) Little Bluestem contributes to the overall richness
3136 of Alabama's wildlife. In addition to the structure of Little
32-Bluestem offering cover and nesting sites for birds, insects,
33-and small mammals, the seeds of Little Bluestem serve as a
34-food source for various organisms.
35-(5) Little Bluestem's distinctive blue-green foliage
36-and reddish-brown seed heads offer unique aesthetic benefits
37-for the residents and visitors of Alabama by adding to the
38-inherent beauty of Alabama's landscapes and natural areas.
39-(6) The planting of Little Bluestem aligns with
40-existing conservation and ecological restoration initiatives

7580 (b) Little Bluestem, Schizachyrium scoparium, is hereby
7681 declared to be the official State Native Grass of Alabama.
7782 Section 2. This act shall become effective on October
7883 1, 2024.
