2525 SR____ RECOGNIZING MAY 2024 AS AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS
2626 AWARENESS MONTH.
2727 WHEREAS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known
2828 by many as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive fatal
2929 neurodegenerative disease in which an individual's brain
3030 loses connection with the muscles, slowly taking away the
3131 ability to walk, talk, eat, and, eventually, breathe; and
3232 WHEREAS, every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with
3333 ALS and someone passes away from ALS; on average, patients
3434 diagnosed with ALS only survive two to five years from the
3535 time of diagnosis; ALS has no cure; and
3636 WHEREAS, individuals who have served in the military
3737 are more likely to develop ALS and die from the disease than
3838 those with no history of military service; and
3939 WHEREAS, securing access to new therapies, durable
4040 medical equipment, and communication technologies is of
4141 vital importance to people living with ALS; and
4242 WHEREAS, clinical trials play a pivotal role in
4343 evaluating new treatments, enhancing quality of life, and
4444 fostering assistive technologies for individuals living with
4545 ALS; and
4646 WHEREAS, we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Ice
4747 Bucket Challenge through a renewed commitment to galvanize
4848 public awareness and support funding that leads to

7878 public awareness and support funding that leads to
7979 significant investments in ALS research; and
8080 WHEREAS, the ALS Association, the largest
8181 philanthropic organization funding ALS research globally,
8282 has committed over $154 million to support more than 550
8383 projects across the United States and 18 other countries;
8484 and
8585 WHEREAS, our commitment to accelerating the pace of
8686 discovery remains unwavering, fueled by the hope that one
8787 day, ALS will be a livable disease for all those who suffer
8888 from it until it can be cured; and
8989 WHEREAS, ALS Awareness Month increases the public's
9090 awareness of the dire circumstances of those individuals who
9191 suffer from ALS and acknowledges the terrible impact this
9292 disease has, not only on the individual, but on his or her
9393 family and the community, and recognizes the research being
9494 done to eradicate this disease; now therefore,
9595 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE LEGISLATURE OF
9696 ALABAMA, That the month of May 2024 is recognized as ALS
9797 Awareness Month, and all Alabamians are encouraged to join
9898 in supporting ALS research, advocating for increased
9999 funding, and standing in solidarity with those individuals
100100 and their families who are affected by this relentless
