27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known |

28 | 28 | | by many as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive fatal |

29 | 29 | | neurodegenerative disease in which an individual's brain |

30 | 30 | | loses connection with the muscles, slowly taking away the |
---|
31 | 31 | | ability to walk, talk, eat, and, eventually, breathe; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with |
---|
33 | 33 | | ALS and someone passes away from ALS; on average, patients |
---|
34 | 34 | | diagnosed with ALS only survive two to five years from the |
---|
35 | 35 | | time of diagnosis; ALS has no cure; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, individuals who have served in the military |
---|
37 | 37 | | are more likely to develop ALS and die from the disease than |
---|
38 | 38 | | those with no history of military service; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, securing access to new therapies, durable |

40 | 40 | | medical equipment, and communication technologies is of |
