25	25	SR____ RECOGNIZING MAY 2024 AS AMYOTROPHIC LATERAL SCLEROSIS
26	26	AWARENESS MONTH.
27	27	WHEREAS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), known
28	28	by many as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive fatal
29	29	neurodegenerative disease in which an individual's brain
30	30	loses connection with the muscles, slowly taking away the
31	31	ability to walk, talk, eat, and, eventually, breathe; and
32	32	WHEREAS, every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with
33	33	ALS and someone passes away from ALS; on average, patients
34	34	diagnosed with ALS only survive two to five years from the
35	35	time of diagnosis; ALS has no cure; and
36	36	WHEREAS, individuals who have served in the military
37	37	are more likely to develop ALS and die from the disease than
38	38	those with no history of military service; and
39	39	WHEREAS, securing access to new therapies, durable
40	40	medical equipment, and communication technologies is of
41	41	vital importance to people living with ALS; and
42	42	WHEREAS, clinical trials play a pivotal role in
43	43	evaluating new treatments, enhancing quality of life, and
44	44	fostering assistive technologies for individuals living with
45	45	ALS; and
46	46	WHEREAS, we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Ice
47	47	Bucket Challenge through a renewed commitment to galvanize
48	48	public awareness and support funding that leads to

79	79	significant investments in ALS research; and
80	80	WHEREAS, the ALS Association, the largest
81	81	philanthropic organization funding ALS research globally,
82	82	has committed over $154 million to support more than 550
83	83	projects across the United States and 18 other countries;
84	84	and
85	85	WHEREAS, our commitment to accelerating the pace of
86	86	discovery remains unwavering, fueled by the hope that one
87	87	day, ALS will be a livable disease for all those who suffer
88	88	from it until it can be cured; and
89	89	WHEREAS, ALS Awareness Month increases the public's
90	90	awareness of the dire circumstances of those individuals who
91	91	suffer from ALS and acknowledges the terrible impact this
92	92	disease has, not only on the individual, but on his or her
93	93	family and the community, and recognizes the research being
94	94	done to eradicate this disease; now therefore,
95	95	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE LEGISLATURE OF
96	96	ALABAMA, That the month of May 2024 is recognized as ALS
97	97	Awareness Month, and all Alabamians are encouraged to join
98	98	in supporting ALS research, advocating for increased
99	99	funding, and standing in solidarity with those individuals
100	100	and their families who are affected by this relentless
101	101	disease.
