18	18	Relating to Monroe County; to further provide for the
19	19	compensation of the sheriff.
20	20	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
21	21	Section 1. Section 45-50-230, Code of Alabama 1975, is
22	22	amended to read as follows:
23	23	"§45-50-230
24	24	(a)(1) In Monroe County, effective immediately, the
25	25	sheriff is entitled to receive an expense allowance in the
26	26	amount of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) per annum. The
27	27	expense allowance shall be in addition to any and all other
28	28	compensation heretofore provided by law and shall be payable
29	29	from the county general fund.
30	30	(2) The expense allowance provided for by this
31	31	subsection shall be paid each month from the treasury of
32	32	Monroe County, in the same manner as county employees are
33	33	paid. The sheriff receiving this expense allowance shall not
34	34	be required to file an accounting thereof.
35	35	(3) Effective with the beginning of the next term of
36	36	office, the sheriff is hereby entitled to receive an
37	37	additional county salary in the amount of ten thousand dollars

67	67	additional county salary in the amount of ten thousand dollars
68	68	($10,000) per annum and the provisions of subdivision (1), at
69	69	that time, shall become null and void. The county compensation
70	70	shall be paid out of the General Fund of Monroe County in the
71	71	same manner as other county employees.
72	72	(4) If there should be enacted a statewide law
73	73	providing for an increase in the sheriff’s salary which, when
74	74	added to the increase provided for under this subsection shall
75	75	exceed ten thousand dollars ($10,000), then the amount of the
76	76	salary increase provided for under this subsection shall
77	77	decrease by the amount in excess of ten thousand dollars
78	78	($10,000).
79	79	(b)(1) The Sheriff of Monroe County shall receive an
80	80	expense allowance of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) per year,
81	81	payable in equal monthly installments from the general fund of
82	82	the county. This expense allowance shall be in addition to all
83	83	other compensation or benefits received by the sheriff and may
84	84	be treated as compensation for retirement contributions.
85	85	(2) Beginning with the next term of office, the expense
86	86	allowance paid to the sheriff as provided in subdivision (1)
87	87	shall become additional compensation for the sheriff and the
88	88	expense allowance shall be null and void. This compensation
89	89	shall be in addition to all other compensation or benefits
90	90	received.
91	91	(c)(1) The Sheriff of Monroe County shall receive an
92	92	additional expense allowance of fifteen thousand dollars
93	93	($15,000) per year, payable in equal monthly installments from
94	94	the general fund of the county. This expense allowance shall
95	95	be in addition to all other compensation or benefits received

125	125	be in addition to all other compensation or benefits received
126	126	by the sheriff and may be treated as compensation for
127	127	retirement contributions.
128	128	(2) Beginning with the next term of office, the expense
129	129	allowance paid to the sheriff as provided in subdivision (1)
130	130	shall become additional compensation for the sheriff and the
131	131	expense allowance in subdivision (1) shall be null and void.
132	132	This compensation shall be in addition to all other
133	133	compensation or benefits received.
134	134	(a) Until January 18, 2027, the Sheriff of Monroe
135	135	County shall continue to receive the same base annual salary
136	136	the sheriff is receiving on May 31, 2025.
137	137	(b) Beginning October 1, 2025, in addition to the base
138	138	salary authorized in subsection (a), the sheriff shall receive
139	139	an expense allowance of fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) per
140	140	annum, payable in equal monthly installments from the county
141	141	general fund. The expense allowance shall be treated as salary
142	142	for retirement purposes.
143	143	(c) Beginning January 18, 2027, the sheriff's base
144	144	salary authorized in subsection (a) shall be increased by
145	145	fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) per annum and the expense
146	146	allowance authorized in subsection (b) is repealed. "
147	147	Section 2. This act shall become effective on June 1,
148	148	2025.
