16	16	This bill would alter the official coat of arms
17	17	of the State of Alabama.
18	18	A BILL
19	19	TO BE ENTITLED
20	20	AN ACT
21	21	Relating to the state coat of arms; to amend Sections
22	22	1-2-1 and 1-2-2, Code of Alabama 1975, to alter the official
23	23	coat of arms of the State of Alabama.
24	24	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
25	25	Section 1. Sections 1-2-1 and 1-2-2, Code of Alabama
26	26	1975, are amended to read as follows:
27	27	"§1-2-1
28	28	Alabama shall have an official coat of arms which shall
29	29	be as follows: a shield upon which is carried the flags of
30	30	four of the five nations which sovereigns that have at various
31	31	times held sovereignty dominion over a part or the whole of
32	32	what is now the State of Alabama: Spain, France, Great
33	33	Britain, and the Confederacy Alabama itself. The union binding
34	34	these flags shall be the shield of the United States. The
35	35	shield upon which the flags and shield of the United States
36	36	are placed shall be supported on either side by an eagle. The

67	67	crest of the coat of arms shall be a ship representing the
68	68	"Badine" which brought the French colonists explorers who
69	69	established the first permanent white settlements European
70	70	colony in the state. Beneath the shield there shall be a
71	71	scroll containing the sentence in Latin: "Audemus jura nostra
72	72	defendere," the English interpretation of which is "We Dare
73	73	Maintain Our Rights." The word "Alabama" shall appear beneath
74	74	the state motto."
75	75	"§1-2-2
76	76	The coat of arms of Alabama as described in heraldic
77	77	terms shall be as follows: arms: quarterly, the first azure
78	78	three fleur de lis or (for France); second quarterly first and
79	79	fourth gules a tower tripple towered or, second and third
80	80	argent a lion rampant gules (for Spain); third azure a saltire
81	81	argent and gules over all a cross of the last fimbriated of
82	82	the second (for Great Britain); fourth gules of a saltire
83	83	azure, fimbriated argent 13 mullets of the last (for the
84	84	Confederacy) pure argenta crimson saltire imposed (for
85	85	Alabama); at center in escutcheon chief azure paly argent and
86	86	gules 13 (for the United States) arms supported by two
87	87	American eagles displayed. Crest: A full rigged ship proper."
88	88	Section 2. This act shall become effective on October
89	89	1, 2025.
