1717 SYNOPSIS:
1818 Under existing law, political parties set the
1919 qualifications for individuals desiring to run for
2020 office as a candidate of that political party.
2121 This bill would prohibit political parties from
2222 disqualifying an individual from running for office
2323 based solely on receipt of contributions from a
2424 particular person or political action committee.

2727 AN ACT
2828 Relating to political parties; to amend Section
2929 17-13-47, Code of Alabama 1975; to prohibit a political party
3030 from disqualifying an individual from running for office based
3131 on receipt of contributions from a particular person or
3232 political action committee.
3333 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
3434 Section 1. Section 17-13-47, Code of Alabama 1975, is
3535 amended to read as follows:

3737 (a) The governing body of a party may fix assessments
3838 upon those able to pay, or other qualifications as it may deem

6868 upon those able to pay, or other qualifications as it may deem
6969 necessary, for persons individuals desiring to become
7070 candidates for nomination to offices at a primary election .,
7171 but such assessments An assessment shall not exceed two
7272 percent of one year's salary of the office sought and, for an
7373 unremunerative or party county office or an unremunerative or
7474 party office to be filled by a vote of a subdivision greater
7575 than one county, it the assessment shall not exceed fifty
7676 dollars ($50) or one hundred fifty dollars ($150) for an
7777 unremunerative or party office to be filled by a vote of the
7878 entire state.
7979 (b) Notwithstanding subsection (a), a political party
8080 may not disqualify an individual for nomination to an office
8181 based solely on receipt by the individual of a campaign
8282 contribution from a particular person or from a particular
8383 political action committee. "
8484 Section 2. This act shall become effective on June 1,
8585 2025.
