17	17	SYNOPSIS:
18	18	Under existing law, political parties set the
19	19	qualifications for individuals desiring to run for
20	20	office as a candidate of that political party.
21	21	This bill would prohibit political parties from
22	22	disqualifying an individual from running for office
23	23	based solely on receipt of contributions from a
24	24	particular person or political action committee.

26	26	TO BE ENTITLED
27	27	AN ACT
28	28	Relating to political parties; to amend Section
29	29	17-13-47, Code of Alabama 1975; to prohibit a political party
30	30	from disqualifying an individual from running for office based
31	31	on receipt of contributions from a particular person or
32	32	political action committee.
33	33	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA:
34	34	Section 1. Section 17-13-47, Code of Alabama 1975, is
35	35	amended to read as follows:
36	36	"§17-13-47
37	37	(a) The governing body of a party may fix assessments
38	38	upon those able to pay, or other qualifications as it may deem

68	68	upon those able to pay, or other qualifications as it may deem
69	69	necessary, for persons individuals desiring to become
70	70	candidates for nomination to offices at a primary election .,
71	71	but such assessments An assessment shall not exceed two
72	72	percent of one year's salary of the office sought and, for an
73	73	unremunerative or party county office or an unremunerative or
74	74	party office to be filled by a vote of a subdivision greater
75	75	than one county, it the assessment shall not exceed fifty
76	76	dollars ($50) or one hundred fifty dollars ($150) for an
77	77	unremunerative or party office to be filled by a vote of the
78	78	entire state.
79	79	(b) Notwithstanding subsection (a), a political party
80	80	may not disqualify an individual for nomination to an office
81	81	based solely on receipt by the individual of a campaign
82	82	contribution from a particular person or from a particular
83	83	political action committee. "
84	84	Section 2. This act shall become effective on June 1,
85	85	2025.
