16+MONTH IN ALABAMA.
1817 WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is the second leading
1918 cause of cancer death among men and women combined in the
2019 United States; and
2120 WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is one of the most highly
2221 preventable forms of cancer because screening tests can find
2322 polyps that can be removed before becoming cancerous; and
2423 WHEREAS, screening tests can detect colorectal cancer
2524 early, when treatment works best; and
2625 WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control and
2726 Prevention estimates that if every individual aged 50 or
2827 older had regular screening tests, as many as 60 percent of
2928 deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented; and
3029 WHEREAS, when detected early, the five-year survival
3130 rate for patients with localized colorectal cancer is 90
3231 percent, but only 39 percent of all diagnoses are diagnosed
3332 at this stage, mostly due to low rates of screening; and
3433 WHEREAS, colorectal cancer screenings can effectively
3534 reduce colorectal cancer incidence and mortality, yet one in
3635 three adults over 50 years of age are not up to date with
3736 recommended colorectal cancer screening; and
3837 WHEREAS, deaths from colorectal cancer occur
3938 disproportionately among those who are underserved or

7170 WHEREAS, since 2014, colorectal cancer rates have
7271 been increasing by two percent per year in people younger
7372 than 50 years of age; and
7473 WHEREAS, public awareness and education campaigns on
7574 colorectal cancer prevention, screening, and symptoms are
7675 held during the month of March each year; and
7776 WHEREAS, educational efforts can help provide
7877 information to the public of methods of prevention and
7978 screening, as well as about symptoms for early detection;
8079 and
8180 WHEREAS, greater awareness of colon cancer and the
8281 means to prevent it could save the lives of hundreds of
8382 Alabamians every year; and
8483 WHEREAS, observing Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
8584 during the month of March would provide a special
8685 opportunity to offer education on the importance of early
8786 detection and screening; now therefore,
8887 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
8988 HOUSES THEROF CONCURRING, That we recognize the importance
9089 of colorectal screenings.
9190 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That we encourage all
9291 Alabamians who are 45 years of age and older to get a
9392 colorectal screening, and we recognize March 2025 as
9493 Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in Alabama.
