1716 ACHIEVEMENTS AND LASTING IMPACT ON AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY
1817 PERTAINING TO WOMEN AND RELIGION.
1918 WHEREAS, with great pleasure and pride, highest
2019 commendations are conveyed to Dr. Shannen Dee Williams for
2120 her professional achievements and lasting impact on African
2221 American History, particularly in regard to women and
2322 religion; and
2423 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams earned her Bachelor of Arts in
2524 History with magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors from
2625 Agnes Scott College; a Master of Arts in Afro-American
2726 Studies from the University of Wisconsin at Madison; and a
2827 Doctor of Philosophy in History from Rutgers University; she
2928 is a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American
3029 Historians and an Associate Professor of History at the
3130 University of Dayton; and
3231 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams' research on the African
3332 American experience, with specializations in women's,
3433 religious, and Black freedom movement history, has been
3534 supported by a host of grants and fellowships, including a
3635 Scholar-in-Residence Fellowship at the Schomburg Center for
3736 Research in Black Culture, a Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral
3837 Fellowship in Religion and Ethics from the Woodrow Wilson
3938 National Foundation, an Albert J. Beveridge Grant from the
40-American Historical Association, and the John Tracy Ellis
41-Dissertation Award from the American Catholic Historical
42-Association; her work has been published in the Journal of

7978 Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom
8079 Struggle, which was named a top five book published in
8180 religion by Publisher's Weekly ; received the 2022 Letitia
8281 Woods Brown Award for Best Book in African American Women's
8382 History from the Association of Black Women Historians; and
8483 the 2023 Wesley-Logan Prize for Outstanding Book in African
8584 Diaspora History from the American Historical Association
8685 and the Association for the Study of African American Life
8786 and History; and
8887 WHEREAS, a lifelong Catholic, Dr. Williams is the
8988 first Black woman elected to the Executive Council of the
9089 American Catholic Historical Association; she is a
9190 co-founder of the Fleming-Morrow Endowment in African
9291 American History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville;
9392 she successfully submitted proposals to establish the Mother
9493 Mary Lange Lecture in Black Catholic History at Villanova
9594 University and the Cyprian Davis, O.S.B., Prize through the
9695 American Catholic Historical Association and the Cushwa
9796 Center for the Study of American Catholicism at the
98-University of Notre Dame; now therefore,
