17	16		ACHIEVEMENTS AND LASTING IMPACT ON AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY
18	17		PERTAINING TO WOMEN AND RELIGION.
19	18		WHEREAS, with great pleasure and pride, highest
20	19		commendations are conveyed to Dr. Shannen Dee Williams for
21	20		her professional achievements and lasting impact on African
22	21		American History, particularly in regard to women and
23	22		religion; and
24	23		WHEREAS, Dr. Williams earned her Bachelor of Arts in
25	24		History with magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors from
26	25		Agnes Scott College; a Master of Arts in Afro-American
27	26		Studies from the University of Wisconsin at Madison; and a
28	27		Doctor of Philosophy in History from Rutgers University; she
29	28		is a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American
30	29		Historians and an Associate Professor of History at the
31	30		University of Dayton; and
32	31		WHEREAS, Dr. Williams' research on the African
33	32		American experience, with specializations in women's,
34	33		religious, and Black freedom movement history, has been
35	34		supported by a host of grants and fellowships, including a
36	35		Scholar-in-Residence Fellowship at the Schomburg Center for
37	36		Research in Black Culture, a Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral
38	37		Fellowship in Religion and Ethics from the Woodrow Wilson
39	38		National Foundation, an Albert J. Beveridge Grant from the
40		-	American Historical Association, and the John Tracy Ellis
41		-	Dissertation Award from the American Catholic Historical
42		-	Association; her work has been published in the Journal of

76	75		column, "The Griot's Cross" in the Catholic News Service
77	76		from 2020 to 2022; and
78	77		WHEREAS, Dr. Williams authored Subversive Habits:
79	78		Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom
80	79		Struggle, which was named a top five book published in
81	80		religion by Publisher's Weekly ; received the 2022 Letitia
82	81		Woods Brown Award for Best Book in African American Women's
83	82		History from the Association of Black Women Historians; and
84	83		the 2023 Wesley-Logan Prize for Outstanding Book in African
85	84		Diaspora History from the American Historical Association
86	85		and the Association for the Study of African American Life
87	86		and History; and
88	87		WHEREAS, a lifelong Catholic, Dr. Williams is the
89	88		first Black woman elected to the Executive Council of the
90	89		American Catholic Historical Association; she is a
91	90		co-founder of the Fleming-Morrow Endowment in African
92	91		American History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville;
93	92		she successfully submitted proposals to establish the Mother
94	93		Mary Lange Lecture in Black Catholic History at Villanova
95	94		University and the Cyprian Davis, O.S.B., Prize through the
96	95		American Catholic Historical Association and the Cushwa
97	96		Center for the Study of American Catholicism at the
98		-	University of Notre Dame; now therefore,
