15	15	HJR___ COMMENDING FRED IRBY III ON HIS STELLAR CAREER AND
16	16	RETIREMENT FROM HOWARD UNIVERSITY.
17	17	WHEREAS, Fred Irby III is highly commended on his
18	18	career of 51 years with Howard University as Professor of
19	19	Music; while he will be missed, his contributions to the
20	20	university and the world of music are unparalleled; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Fred Irby III is a native of Mobile,
22	22	Alabama, and a graduate of Grambling State University and
23	23	Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville; as Professor
24	24	of Music at Howard University since 1974, he is the
25	25	Coordinator of Instrumental Music, trumpet instructor, and
26	26	Director of the internationally-acclaimed Howard University
27	27	Jazz Ensemble (HUJE); and
28	28	WHEREAS, HUJE was founded in 1975 by Mr. Irby;
29	29	outstanding performances in the United States, Europe, South
30	30	and Central America, China, Japan, Africa, and the Caribbean
31	31	have led to it being recognized as one of the foremost
32	32	university jazz ensembles in the world; HUJE has been heard
33	33	on the radio and television as well as in concert, often
34	34	appearing with celebrated artists; members of HUJE have won
35	35	awards as performers, composers, and arrangers; and the
36	36	ensemble includes among its alumni many celebrated jazz
37	37	artists; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Mr. Irby holds active membership in the

69	69	Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, the National
70	70	Association for Music Education, the International Trumpet
71	71	Guild, the International Association of Symphony and Opera
72	72	Musicians, the American Federation of Musicians, and is a
73	73	member of the Board of Directors of the Washington Jazz Arts
74	74	Institute and the International Women's Brass Conference;

76	76	WHEREAS, major orchestral performances in which Mr.
77	77	Irby has taken part include the Twentieth Century Fox movie
78	78	Alvin and the Chipmunks, the ABC-TV show Dancing with the
79	79	Stars, the NBC-TV show America's Got Talent, the 56th
80	80	Primetime Emmy Awards, the 87th, 88th, and 89th Academy
81	81	Awards Gala, the Kennedy Center Honors Gala, and the
82	82	Christmas in Washington Gala; and
83	83	WHEREAS, Mr. Irby received the 2008 DownBeat Magazine
84	84	Achievement Award In Jazz Education, and also in 2008 was
85	85	inducted into the Grambling State University Alumni Hall of
86	86	Fame; he received the Disney Performing Arts Award for
87	87	Excellence in Teaching Jazz in 2009 at the MENC Teaching
88	88	Music Awards ceremony and was designated a Lowell Mason
89	89	Fellow in 2010; in 2016, he received the Ronnie Wells Jazz
90	90	Service Award at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, the DC Jazz
91	91	Festival awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award at their
92	92	2016 Gala at the Kennedy Center, and he was inducted into
93	93	the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville Alumni Hall
94	94	of Fame; and
95	95	WHEREAS, he has served as the Music Director of the
96	96	Maryland, Oklahoma, Northwest MENC All-State Honor Jazz

128	128	served as an adjudicator for the DownBeat Magazine Student
129	129	Music Awards, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, and the
130	130	Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Foundation Performing
131	131	Arts Scholarship; and
132	132	WHEREAS, Professor Irby established the Benny Golson
133	133	Jazz Master Award in 1996 to honor the legacy of the 1996
134	134	NEA Jazz Master and was instrumental in Mr. Golson receiving
135	135	an Honorary Doctorate in Music from Howard University, his
136	136	alma mater, in 2014; additionally, he was instrumental in
137	137	creating the endowed Abraham S. Venable Scholarship for
138	138	students in the Jazz Studies program at Howard University;
139	139	now therefore,
140	140	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
141	141	HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Fred Irby III is highly
142	142	commended and congratulated on his esteemed musical career,
143	143	and this Legislature and Howard University thank him for his
144	144	contributions to the musical community and university and
145	145	wish him luck in all future endeavors.
