1515 HJR___ COMMENDING FRED IRBY III ON HIS STELLAR CAREER AND
1616 RETIREMENT FROM HOWARD UNIVERSITY.
1717 WHEREAS, Fred Irby III is highly commended on his
1818 career of 51 years with Howard University as Professor of
1919 Music; while he will be missed, his contributions to the
2020 university and the world of music are unparalleled; and
2121 WHEREAS, Fred Irby III is a native of Mobile,
2222 Alabama, and a graduate of Grambling State University and
2323 Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville; as Professor
2424 of Music at Howard University since 1974, he is the
2525 Coordinator of Instrumental Music, trumpet instructor, and
2626 Director of the internationally-acclaimed Howard University
2727 Jazz Ensemble (HUJE); and
2828 WHEREAS, HUJE was founded in 1975 by Mr. Irby;
2929 outstanding performances in the United States, Europe, South
3030 and Central America, China, Japan, Africa, and the Caribbean
3131 have led to it being recognized as one of the foremost
3232 university jazz ensembles in the world; HUJE has been heard
3333 on the radio and television as well as in concert, often
3434 appearing with celebrated artists; members of HUJE have won
3535 awards as performers, composers, and arrangers; and the
3636 ensemble includes among its alumni many celebrated jazz
3737 artists; and
3838 WHEREAS, Mr. Irby holds active membership in the

6868 WHEREAS, Mr. Irby holds active membership in the
6969 Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, the National
7070 Association for Music Education, the International Trumpet
7171 Guild, the International Association of Symphony and Opera
7272 Musicians, the American Federation of Musicians, and is a
7373 member of the Board of Directors of the Washington Jazz Arts
7474 Institute and the International Women's Brass Conference;
7575 and
7676 WHEREAS, major orchestral performances in which Mr.
7777 Irby has taken part include the Twentieth Century Fox movie
7878 Alvin and the Chipmunks, the ABC-TV show Dancing with the
7979 Stars, the NBC-TV show America's Got Talent, the 56th
8080 Primetime Emmy Awards, the 87th, 88th, and 89th Academy
8181 Awards Gala, the Kennedy Center Honors Gala, and the
8282 Christmas in Washington Gala; and
8383 WHEREAS, Mr. Irby received the 2008 DownBeat Magazine
8484 Achievement Award In Jazz Education, and also in 2008 was
8585 inducted into the Grambling State University Alumni Hall of
8686 Fame; he received the Disney Performing Arts Award for
8787 Excellence in Teaching Jazz in 2009 at the MENC Teaching
8888 Music Awards ceremony and was designated a Lowell Mason
8989 Fellow in 2010; in 2016, he received the Ronnie Wells Jazz
9090 Service Award at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, the DC Jazz
9191 Festival awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award at their
9292 2016 Gala at the Kennedy Center, and he was inducted into
9393 the Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville Alumni Hall
9494 of Fame; and
9595 WHEREAS, he has served as the Music Director of the
9696 Maryland, Oklahoma, Northwest MENC All-State Honor Jazz

127127 Ensembles and the inaugural MENC Honor Jazz Ensemble; he has
128128 served as an adjudicator for the DownBeat Magazine Student
129129 Music Awards, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, and the
130130 Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Foundation Performing
131131 Arts Scholarship; and
132132 WHEREAS, Professor Irby established the Benny Golson
133133 Jazz Master Award in 1996 to honor the legacy of the 1996
134134 NEA Jazz Master and was instrumental in Mr. Golson receiving
135135 an Honorary Doctorate in Music from Howard University, his
136136 alma mater, in 2014; additionally, he was instrumental in
137137 creating the endowed Abraham S. Venable Scholarship for
138138 students in the Jazz Studies program at Howard University;
139139 now therefore,
140140 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
141141 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Fred Irby III is highly
142142 commended and congratulated on his esteemed musical career,
143143 and this Legislature and Howard University thank him for his
144144 contributions to the musical community and university and
145145 wish him luck in all future endeavors.
