WHEREAS, the United States began the tradition of formally recognizing and honoring its Veterans in 1938 in the form of "Armistice Day" on November 11, the anniversary of the armistice signing concluding World War I, and was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated"; and WHEREAS, in 1954, acknowledging the sacrifices of our Veterans from World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the act to redesignate the holiday as "Veterans Day"; and WHEREAS, President Dwight Eisenhower called for "all Veterans, their organizations, and the entire citizenry to join hands to ensure proper and widespread observance of this day"; and WHEREAS, Alabama has sent many of its sons and daughters into military service in defense of our great nation; and WHEREAS, a great many Veterans have taken up residence in Alabama and continue their service in a multitude of capacities serving our communities and continuing their significant contributions to our State and our Nation's defense; and 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 HJR266 INTRODUCED Page 2 our Nation's defense; and WHEREAS, the State of Alabama wishes to express its support, gratitude, and deepest appreciation to all our Veterans who have honorably served in defense of our Nation and for the cause of freedom around the world in times of peace and conflict; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we designate the period of November 5th through Veterans Day, November 11th, each and every year in the State of Alabama, as Veterans Week and call upon all its residents to observe this time with appropriate programs and events celebrating and thanking our Veterans. 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41
