33	33	HJR___ CELEBRATING NOVEMBER 5-11 AS VETERANS WEEK IN THE
34	34	STATE OF ALABAMA.
35	35	WHEREAS, the United States began the tradition of
36	36	formally recognizing and honoring its Veterans in 1938 in
37	37	the form of "Armistice Day" on November 11, the anniversary
38	38	of the armistice signing concluding World War I, and was
39	39	"dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter
40	40	celebrated"; and
41	41	WHEREAS, in 1954, acknowledging the sacrifices of our
42	42	Veterans from World War II and the Korean War, Congress
43	43	amended the act to redesignate the holiday as "Veterans
44	44	Day"; and
45	45	WHEREAS, President Dwight Eisenhower called for "all
46	46	Veterans, their organizations, and the entire citizenry to
47	47	join hands to ensure proper and widespread observance of
48	48	this day"; and
49	49	WHEREAS, Alabama has sent many of its sons and
50	50	daughters into military service in defense of our great
51	51	nation; and
52	52	WHEREAS, a great many Veterans have taken up
53	53	residence in Alabama and continue their service in a
54	54	multitude of capacities serving our communities and
55	55	continuing their significant contributions to our State and
56	56	our Nation's defense; and

87	87	WHEREAS, the State of Alabama wishes to express its
88	88	support, gratitude, and deepest appreciation to all our
89	89	Veterans who have honorably served in defense of our Nation
90	90	and for the cause of freedom around the world in times of
91	91	peace and conflict; now therefore,
92	92	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
93	93	HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we designate the period of
94	94	November 5th through Veterans Day, November 11th, each and
95	95	every year in the State of Alabama, as Veterans Week and
96	96	call upon all its residents to observe this time with
97	97	appropriate programs and events celebrating and thanking our
98	98	Veterans.
