3333 HJR___ CELEBRATING NOVEMBER 5-11 AS VETERANS WEEK IN THE
3434 STATE OF ALABAMA.
3535 WHEREAS, the United States began the tradition of
3636 formally recognizing and honoring its Veterans in 1938 in
3737 the form of "Armistice Day" on November 11, the anniversary
3838 of the armistice signing concluding World War I, and was
3939 "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter
4040 celebrated"; and
4141 WHEREAS, in 1954, acknowledging the sacrifices of our
4242 Veterans from World War II and the Korean War, Congress
4343 amended the act to redesignate the holiday as "Veterans
4444 Day"; and
4545 WHEREAS, President Dwight Eisenhower called for "all
4646 Veterans, their organizations, and the entire citizenry to
4747 join hands to ensure proper and widespread observance of
4848 this day"; and
4949 WHEREAS, Alabama has sent many of its sons and
5050 daughters into military service in defense of our great
5151 nation; and
5252 WHEREAS, a great many Veterans have taken up
5353 residence in Alabama and continue their service in a
5454 multitude of capacities serving our communities and
5555 continuing their significant contributions to our State and
5656 our Nation's defense; and

8787 WHEREAS, the State of Alabama wishes to express its
8888 support, gratitude, and deepest appreciation to all our
8989 Veterans who have honorably served in defense of our Nation
9090 and for the cause of freedom around the world in times of
9191 peace and conflict; now therefore,
9292 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
9393 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we designate the period of
9494 November 5th through Veterans Day, November 11th, each and
9595 every year in the State of Alabama, as Veterans Week and
9696 call upon all its residents to observe this time with
9797 appropriate programs and events celebrating and thanking our
9898 Veterans.
