1615 HJR___ COMMENDING MARY SANDERS WARD FOR EXEMPLARY SERVICE TO
1716 THE ALABAMA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
1817 WHEREAS, it is with profound gratitude that the
1918 Alabama House of Representatives and its staff congratulate
2019 Mary Sanders Ward after 63 years of devoted service to the
2120 Legislature and the people of this great state; and
2221 WHEREAS, a native of Tallassee, Alabama, Mary began
2322 her many years of public service on June 7, 1961, with the
2423 Alabama Highway Department; thereafter, she served in
2524 various capacities with the Alabama Public Service
2625 Commission and the Department of Conservation and Natural
2726 Resources; and
2827 WHEREAS, she began her career with the Legislature
2928 when she was appointed to work in the House of
3029 Representatives by Speaker Jimmy Clark on March 31, 1987;
3130 she transitioned to working as a Front Desk Supervisor in
3231 1994 and was promoted to Supervisor of the House Journal
3332 Room on October 1, 1997; and
3433 WHEREAS, since becoming supervisor of the House
3534 Journal Room, she has been responsible for ensuring that the
3635 Journal of the House is an accurate account of the actions
3736 taken on the floor each session; she has served an
3837 astounding 82 legislative sessions; and
3938 WHEREAS, the Journal of the House is the sole legally
40-recognized document that can be used in a court of law

68+WHEREAS, the Journal of the House is the sole legally
7069 recognized document that can be used in a court of law
7170 whenever there are questions regarding actions taken on the
7271 floor of the House; it is of vital importance that it be
7372 assembled and published without error; she would work day
7473 and night and on weekends to ensure that every task related
7574 to the production of the Journal was completed to
7675 perfection; and
7776 WHEREAS, capitalizing on her industriousness and her
7877 unfailing work ethic, Mary played an important role in
7978 developing the early computer systems and worked with
8079 developers tirelessly on the ALIS system which was used by
8180 the Legislature for over 25 years; most notably, her ability
8281 to quickly and expertly create macros enhanced employee's
8382 ability to perform their jobs more effectively; her computer
8483 savviness continued to serve her well as she spearheaded
8584 efforts to develop and implement LINX, the new legislative
8685 computer system; and
8786 WHEREAS, she has had a front-row seat to many
8887 historical moments in the Alabama House Chamber; her
8988 expertise, legislative procedural knowledge, and rapport
9089 with the members of the House of Representatives has served
9190 as a catalyst for her successful career and positive impact
9291 on the legislative process; she immensely enjoyed assisting
9392 others with problems and tasks, and she was truly at her
9493 best when she was helping others; and
9594 WHEREAS, a loving dog owner, she has engaged in
9695 numerous humanitarian efforts to improve the lives of pets
9796 in the Montgomery area; most recently, she daringly rescued
98-a kitten from the car engine of a colleague in the State

126+in the Montgomery area; most recently, she daringly rescued
128127 a kitten from the car engine of a colleague in the State
129128 House parking lot; a coffee connoisseur and purveyor of
130129 unique foods and beverages, Mary was always willing to share
131130 with her colleagues; to the surprise of many, Mary continues
132131 to love mastering video games, such as Legend of Zelda;
133132 demonstrating an unrivaled green thumb, she also capitalizes
134133 on every moment to work with plants and flowers in her yard;
135134 and
136135 WHEREAS, following her retirement, we know that she
137136 will continue to enjoy spending time with her pets; her
138137 daughter, Renee; her granddaughters, Gracie and Chloe, along
139138 with their husbands; and working in her yard; now therefore,
140139 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
141140 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Mary Sanders Ward be highly
142141 commended for her 63 years of service and dedication not
143142 only to this body and its members, but also to the people of
144143 the Great State of Alabama, and that we wish her a long and
145144 enjoyable retirement.
