17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, native plants are indigenous species that |
---|
18 | 18 | | have evolved alongside native wildlife and occur naturally |
---|
19 | 19 | | in a particular geographic region, ecosystem, and habitat; |
---|
20 | 20 | | Alabama, with its diverse ecosystems ranging from the |
---|
21 | 21 | | coastal plains to the Appalachian Mountains, is home to many |
---|
22 | 22 | | native plants; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, these native plants play a significant role |
---|
24 | 24 | | in Alabama's ecosystems, providing food and shelter for |
---|
25 | 25 | | local wildlife and contributing to soil health; they also |
---|
26 | 26 | | offer excellent choices for gardening in the state; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, native plants are well-adapted to Alabama's |
---|
28 | 28 | | soils, temperatures, precipitation, and environmental |
---|
29 | 29 | | conditions, making them the best option for conserving and |
---|
30 | 30 | | protecting our environment and adapting to its changes; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Alabama's native plants provide food, |
---|
32 | 32 | | including nectar, pollen, seeds, and foliage for native |
---|
33 | 33 | | birds, caterpillars, butterflies, bees, and other wildlife |
---|
34 | 34 | | in ways that non-native plants cannot; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Alabama is home to more than 3,120 native |
---|
36 | 36 | | plant species, including large shade trees, shrubs, |
---|
37 | 37 | | perennials, vines, grasses, and wildflowers; in the coastal |
---|
38 | 38 | | and southern regions, the Southern Magnolia and the |
---|

76 | 76 | | federally listed under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 |

77 | 77 | | and include the Green Pitcher Plant, Alabama Canebrake |

78 | 78 | | Pitcher Plant, Alabama Leather Flower, and Gentian Pinkroot; |

80 | 80 | | WHEREAS, it is important to encourage public |

81 | 81 | | awareness about the benefits of Alabama's native plants to |
---|
82 | 82 | | pollinators and other wildlife, the economy, and the health |
---|
83 | 83 | | and sustainability of Alabama's fragile ecosystems; now |
---|
84 | 84 | | therefore, |

85 | 85 | | BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH |

86 | 86 | | HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the month of April is |
---|
87 | 87 | | recognized as Alabama Native Plant Month, and we encourage |
---|
88 | 88 | | all Alabamians to observe the month of April as both |
---|
89 | 89 | | National Native Plant Month and Alabama Native Plant Month |
---|
90 | 90 | | by removing non-native invasive plants from yards and |
---|
91 | 91 | | communities; planting native trees, shrubs, and flowers; and |
---|
92 | 92 | | educating our citizens about the many benefits of Alabama's |
---|
